March 3rd a snowy Monday

I must get back into the habit of posting before I leave school or it will just get forgotten!

Sorry followers....day late and a dollar short!

Reminders

hoodie orders if intersted due this Friday March 7th
spelling work will resume Tuesday (tomorrow) for a Friday test this week.
Purdy's orders after spring break
Term 2 report cards go home this Friday

our day

Phys Ed.
we played a few round of a classic group game called Space Invaders and it started well but unfortunately it only takes a few to 'cheat' and it becomes not so much fun anymore! Thank-you to all the students who played fair and hsd some fun. I appreciate it.

Language work
introducing conjunctions and combining sentences to create compound, complex sentences that include adjectival phrases (which need more punctuation).
moving on from that this week to write paragraphs that are on topic.

math 7 angle and line properties
understanding line and angle properties can do away with needing to rely on a protractor to measure angles
when one angle is given in a parallel line with a transversal knowing the properties of alternate, corresponding, exterior, interior and opposite angles is helpful in determining the missing values of angles. It is a matter of understanding/learning the properties to accurately find a missing angle. I love geometry it is all so perfect how things 'fit togther'.

read to self
drop in resource time
(forgot to prepare a new reading record sheet!- tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow....)

Science lab
We got 'slimed'
Polymer lab - a hands on lab encouraging every student to make baggie of 'slime' (goop, coloured gel)
using safety glasses and table covers we mixed 4% Sodium Borate solution and coloured it with food colouring disolving the Sodium Borate. The we slowly added it to a baggie of 25g of polyvinal alcohol and worked the mixture until it resulted in a gel like 'slime' in a variety of consistencies. Some folks were so excited that they poured in too much Sodium borate solution too fast and then we found that balancing it was not as easy as just pouiring in more PVA solution. You can imagine the clean up on this one (actually it wasn't that bad) but please
know that the food colouring will eventually come off your children's hands!!
Next time I will but a box of those polyeurathane gloves!
I think they enjoyed the lab - tomorrow we will follow up with the lab report (which in hindsight, I should have done first!)
I always learn how to do it better and then forget so I am writing these ideas for a more efficent lab somewhere safe that I will find it BEFORE I do the lab again.

chapter of our class novel-
dismissal
have a good night
Mrs. J.

Friday Feb 28th

reading Lit circles - small groups started their novels for Lit circle- we have seven groups with four novels on the go...
Woodsong Gary Paulsen
Stargirl Jerry Spinelli
Dragon Keeper Carole Wilkinson
Milkweed Jerry Spinelli

mapping activity Capital cities of Asia- boy, are there some crazy names of cities.
I love this group work style as the student pour over the atlases and help each other as they find the names and places.

Math
Math review Jeopardy game
I am NOT Vanna White...i need help being a game show host. Thanks to Mrs. Masterson and Mrs. Dawson who did their best to help me bumble through the categories and keep count of the winnings!

read to self last day in February- collected record sheets

computer session completing the Term 2 reflections (which I was planning to send home this week in the report envelopes. Some of them are too funny...For example

"Dear darling mother let me tell you about my term ..."
"This is a trap - the teacher wants me to tattle tale on myself- no fair"

end of day art and novel and pack up and on Monday thinking back Friday after 2:45pm was a blur!
From here on I will make the effort to stay up to date with posts so I (and you) do not have to rely on my failing memory.
Yeah, the reports were completed this weekend!
10pm on Saturday evening and 10:30pm on Sunday (other weekend things happened too of course (soccer, laundry, dishes etc.) but writing reports takes time.

More later.
