Tuesday Dec 17th and Wednesday Dec 18th together!!

Have to apologize for the missing post yesterday...I did not get home until 10pm after curling and completely forgot to post from home earlier.

So two days together

Wednesday 18th
Reminders
Read to complete Touching Spirit Bear
Class day for us on Friday includes a gift game, a movie and some treats and Christmas activities. Students have agreed to bring a (not more than $5) wrapped candy gift and something to share with their classmates - for example: a popcorn package, a bag of pretzels, a box of oranges, some baking from home or the store etc
I will be supplying everyone with hot chocolate, marshmallows and candy canes for dunking, I bought the requested movie, A Christmas Story, and perhaps a baked goodie (depends on my time on Thursday evening)

Our day

We started our day with a Christmas journal write about the spirit of 'giving'
I had the students watch the WestJet Christmas giveaway on you tube and we talked about the joy of giving that the passengers enjoyed just as much as the employees (who did the shopping and were in tears watching the results of their generosity)
If you haven't seen it, it is worth the 3 minutes on-line
Then we considered the Calgary man who is donating his 40 million lottery winnings to causes close to his heart.
Another short video shared the different ways people give time and joy to others (helping with Christmas dinner at a food kitchen, spending time with people in nursing homes or helping with shopping or decorating etc).

I asked the students to pretend they had a million virtual dollars but only a limited amount for themselves. Their journal write was about what causes locally, in Canada and internationally were so close to their hearts that they would donate their virtual money to them. It was interesting to see what decisions were made.

Cancer foundation came up a lot
Children's hospital
Food banks and community helping hands society
SPCA
Local hospital

All very worthy causes. The students enjoyed  the Karma part that came with giving ...after their donations, I asked them to make a wish of their own...It was fun to hear all their ideas and wishes

French Bingo with our Christmas and winter vocabulary
I had some trinkets I bought from the dollar store (apologies in advance) but the students went crazy for them and at the end of the day although we practiced some French vocabulary, the French was not the import at part of the game today!!
I can't say the last time that I ever did a rock , paper, scissors decision for dollar store trinkets!!
