It has been a long week and I am still conducting parent teacher meetings this evening but it has been very insightful seeing and hearing from my students' parents perspective. Thank you all for your time this week.
Reminders
Christmas Craft fair at our school this evening- come check out the 'goods' - you might find some Christmas deals
At Home
reading part two of the novel Touching Spirit Bear is the only thing on the agenda - the book needs to be completed for the project choices to begin (some already have)
no new work for home just read
Our Day
Novel time after daily French
Touching Spirit Bear
reading and starting in on the choices for independent and partner projects once the novel is complete. The majority of students are still reading the end of part two- so, as usual there were a number of different activites going on simultaneously.
Science Lab properties of sand versus treated hydrophobic sand
partner lab
Hypothesis: that introducing water to sand until it was saturated would cause a muddy mess
confirmed
Hypothesis: that doing the same water process to the treated sand would have the same outcome
needed to adjust as the second hypothesis was proved to be false
The students seemed to really get a kick from the hydrophobic sand and were confused initially at the mercury like resisitance of the sand to allow water to soak into it.
I wasn't able to do a bigger hand in water experiment due to time so I showed a 5min Youtube video showing what that is like and when we have time we can recreate that experiment.
It was a big hit for a Friday...
I am always surprised that the smallest scientific things can cause so much wonder in this age level...I enjoy watching them be amazed by the unexpected
One student quipped that it was "The best ever experiment with dirt"
so funny...
Math 7 complete a basic set of examples for adding integers and then we played 'integer battleships' on a 4 quadrant grid. Placing points and seeing if a partner could detect and 'hit' them by calling coordinates at random.
read to self
November winners of the Scholastic draw were Kobe and Simrin
and I'd like E.T. to know that his record was handed into the draw by Taylor and he had already filled in Novemeber 29th as "I was not here" (so entrepreneurial):)
I don't know why but it gave me a kick that someone was thinking ahead...good planning, Eric. Impressive!
computer session
socials project research (30 minutes) and some free time (15 minutes)
would like to do an instructional session on using the updated Inspiration program so students can create research webs and graphic organizers
back in class after getting us all organized for the weekend we started into Chapter 23 of Word Nerd. There wasn't a great deal of time left before the dismissal bell so they were chomping at the bit to get home tonight. Some were just eager to set up their tables for the craft fair- good luck tonight to Lucy and Jade.
Have a great weekend- this is the last soccer weekend until the Spring so maybe see you at the fields Saturday :) Hope the rain holds off for one more Saturday.
Mrs. J.
