Yes, they were tired today :) Me too!
Getting a jump on today's post at our computer session as the students look up images of winning Remembrance Day posters from previous competitions- Seeing possibilities and the quality of previous entries gives the students some perspective on and ideas for their posters and poems.
Surviving the aftermath of Halloween takes energy too :)
Reminders
permission slips will go home Monday for the re take photos. Today I made a list of students who requested retakes and will prepare the slips and distribute for the photo company Monday Nov 4th (the administrivia never ends!)
Monday we will also be electing two students to represent our class at the the school rep committee- again, a list of candiddates was draw up today and after brief camapign elections we will vote on Monday
We are preparing for a Remembrance Day assembly on Thursday Oct 7th
Next Friday and the following Monday the students will have a four day weekend the District has planned a collaborative teacher day on Friday and Monday is the Remembrance Day stat
No homework this weekend
Our Day...
We used this morning as a bit of a "catch up" session for students who needed time to complete activites and work that they had not previously managed to complete for assessment including
spelling activites
language reading booklet Right Brain, Left Brain
Science booklets for Chapter 1 in grade 6 and grade 7
if students needed help organizing because they couldn't find things, that happened first (approx. 3 stduents!!) and then once the work that they swore they didn't have or had handed in already was found (in various stages of completion :)) we managed to re focus on the task at hand.
Those students finished work and all up to date (and organized) were able to take some time to see the samples of winning posters and poetry work from previous years and get started on their own conrtibutions either for a poster or literary work for Remembrance Day.
not everyone is obligated to enter the local competition but there are prizes and recognition for the students' efforts and the nice thing about the categories is that Grade 6 is considered Intermediate level (gr 4-6) while the grade 7 students are competing with grade 7-9. So there is a good chance that a grade six entry of good quality has a winning chance. So I like to encourage students to consider entering a poster.
Today a couple of student made an amazing start and one managed to finish a beautifully coloured entry. (great job, Eric)
Other work will contribute to our display on the Remembrance Day bulletin board.
Math 7
I returned Quiz 5 redo results and, truthfully, while a couple did a better job- the majority of the redo tests did not make a huge difference and confirmed to me why I prefer the students to review and study for the quiz the first time- I have found through trial and error that if the students know that a redo is guaranteed they do not bother to work for the first quiz.
Oh well- live and learn and move on!
There were approx. 5 students absent today so rather than begin something new we did a quick look at mathematical terminology and I had a vocabulary search for them to work on so they could be social, help each other and learn some mathematical vocab. at the same time. Later in class we tried a few "number placement" games and some managed to do (solve) them much faster that it took me to develop them!!! Arrrggghh
Read to self was interrupted for the first 20 minutes for students who (and most did) want to see the end of the Goonies. Then we decided to start the November reading record on Monday and allow a quiet time for posters and reading and other pursuits of a quiet nature. Much needed - the quiet time that is!
Computer session
Remembrance Day for 20 minutes and free time for the second half (which is why I have managed to get this post completed- nearly!)
Back in class (we are not there yet) I intend to read the next chapter of Word Nerd (Ch 18 now) as the students pack up for the weekend and last but not least remind them of the parts some have signed up to help with for the ceremony on Thursday next week.
As an introduction to the Peer Pressure unit for Health and career next week, I am asking the students to consider their personality- are they assertive, passive, aggressive or not completlety sure how they might respond in situations. We will be doing an informal (not used for assessment!) inventory that will highlight individual students NEEDS in a peer group- it will determine if they need to feel a sense of belonging, power, freedom or fun (entertainment) to function best in a peer group. We did some predicting before the inventory and we will see if the results are the same when we do the inventory on MOnday :)
Have a great weekend- I need to check out the new templates for the report cards and get my head around assessing for term 1
