Day before camp at Evans Lake and the students were vibrating some with excitement and others with trepidation but all had real difficulty being in the school 'zone' today for many reasons. It was a challenging day and I just had to summon my inner zen to remain patient and as understanding as possible!!
Anyway...
No Homework
reminder to be at school all packed and ready with a bagged lunch for camp tomorrow- asked them not to overpack- no need for big hockey bags of equipment for three days! Perhaps a few more socks for wet feet and a rain jacket - the list was pretty comprehensive
sleeping bags and pillows
Our day...
class community circle this morning to address some of the on-going social issues among my students both boys and girls many fueled by hurtful rumours and name calling on social media. I find that the students are able to be respectful in the discussion circle and are very aware of the right things to say but when it comes time to follow through and behave differently, there is a real divide between their words and their actions in general. It is worriesome.
Newspaper teams for the Newspaper project
5 teams want to report on Ancient Rome and 1 on Greece
Newspaper titles: Greecey Times, The Roman Daily, The Roman's Journal, Roman in the Deep, Roman Times and one undecided [ ] insert Roman title here!
All editors, co-editors and journalist reporters are assigned per team.
Some of the submissions are already underway and are creative and seem to be engaging the writers who are enjoying having some fun with the antics of the Roman civilization- (my opinion) wonder if they realize we really haven't come that far from Roman times today!!!
Math 7 Fractions
Subtracting mixed numbers- two methods- either using the whole number method and borrowing a whole number or using the improper fraction method- worked on examples in text Ch 7.4 p254-255
silent reading
Roman history- used videos to show the recreation of the ruins of Rome but it wouldn't load properly unfortunately so we tried a clip about the Colisseum and an 8 minute Histroy Channel clip about the beginning of the Empire and the end of the Republic. Informative - better than trying to read about it today!
it was diffcult to keep the attention of the students this afternoon but the clips helped because they weren't listening to me!!
Word/spelling puzzle i before e except after c and all the exceptions to that rule -
discuss packing and camp preparations- lots of questions - I sense a bit of nervous energy
Dismissal
No posts for the remainder of this week. I'll be in the forest!
Have a great week and weekend.
