Back to school...in the rain.
Think everyone enjoyed the long weekend but it was difficult for us to 'get back in the swing'
Homework
read your novel (some not completed novels yet which makes it difficult for literary circle!!)
some fractions (adding mixed numbers) practice for Math7
Reminders
UBC permission forms signed
Camp responsibility forms signed
Our day...
Phys Ed. class imdoor game of 'stones': a tag game involving bulding up your team's 'treasure stash' (bean bags) by theiving from the other team's treasure chest without being caught- needs teamwork, strategy and lots of running.
Last classroom novel session before the Thursday Literary circles in which the students will be sharing their favourite pieces and reading them to their peers for discussion.
Reading, thinking, prepping and considering connections of text to self.
Math 7 survey results were very interesting. I gave a handout to the students so they could read and consider the overall results so if you are interested you should ask for a look at it.
80% of the students said they did not review or study for the last Unit review (on Area and Pereimeter) but over 80% think it is a good idea to study for a test!!
95% used the formula card they prepared for the test but forgot to use it to write out the formula on the test!
They made sopme excellent suggestions for what they (and I) could do differently in order to improve results. We agreed to a Thursday redo of the unit and I have asked them to really make an effort to prepare for it.
Today we continued with the fraction unit: comparing fractions, changing mixed numbers to imprpoer fractions and made a start in adding/subtracting mixed numbers.
Part weather- part bike race prep- part confusion meant that we cancelled the lunch time track and field (meeting at recess tomorrow)
Silent reading- was good once students settled
French- frustrating- the resource I used was a bit confusing. The icons for the directions (which was the point of the lesson) were confusing so we struggled through it and I became a bit impatient with all the silliness about left or right, right. (no left)!!! You get the picture, right (no left!). I gave up and the students had a field day with it. C'est la vie.
Personal Planning - abandoned that too just because it probably wasn't the right time or day for that particular lesson on reproduction!!! We will get to it later this week (or next!)
Instead, I defaulted to the Science Rocks and Minerals lesson which follows up the rock lab that we did a couple of weeks ago. We completed the day with a short dvd by Eyewitness productions on the creation and historical use of rocks and minerals throughout history and world architecture. It brought our science and socials learning together. It also allowed everyone (including me) to calm down a bit from some of the 'high spirits'.
As afternoons go- this one needed a do-over!! lol
Oh well- need to be flexible at this time of the year!
Have a good evening
Mrs. J.
