Math 7 review of area and perimeter Tuesday May 14th
Our day...
Band class
Novel time until recess
Math 7 review of the problems set yesterday finding the area of a circle p285-286 even numbers to #16.
We did them together and the students checked their individual answers and format. I cannot seem to convey to them the importance of step by step format using the formula as step 1, the variables of the problem in the formula as step 2, the artithmetic of the formula as step 3 and the solution complete with units squared as step 4. When solutions go wrong it is much easier to discover the error with this format and correct it.
Nice to hear some math discussion among the studens about how to solve the problems- especially #16 which asked for the area of concentric circles (in a curling house). Need to follow that one up again on Monmday as it was so close to lunch I lost my audience for the explanation of the complete area of the circles! Sheesh...
Kite construction time (yesterday we decorated) as I thought Friday afternoon would be a good time to fly them: the wind was perfect and the sun was not quite as bright as it has been- some clouds rolling into the valley.
Silent reading didn't happen but as kites were completed more books appeared :)
Computer session- the tricks to flying kites- a couple of videos on-line showed how to fly the kites they have made. The Kites in the Classroom program also has a video if anyone is interested in checking out the project.
Back to class- pack up/clean up and head out into the back field make our best effort to fly those homemade kites. Ask your son or daughter how successful they were this year (last year was not 100% successful but there have been some material switches using Tevlar which is a reinforced platic 'paper' and might mean that they are more sturdy than the paper design we used last year).
Except for a couple of mishaps, like falling into the flower bed backing up, some entanglements due to flying too close to a classmate and knots that came unknotted, the kites were excellent this year. The material switch has made all the difference and the studnets seemed to have a great deal of fun running and flying their kites. Some were like pro kite flyers - great to watch them have fun. many wanted to take them home so look out for some kite flyers near you.
Have a great weekend
