Homework
Work on the class novel as the goal is to complete the reading and work by Thursday this week (before the May Long Weekend)
Math7 review test on the area and perimeter unit (which inculdes circles) - students were given a what to study review sheet today; however, there were 6 absent today!
Reminders
Sent home a class newsletter: End of The Year Information for parents with a packing list for camp and a student responsibility form which is to be signed returned (just detach it from the newsletter.)
no school Friday or Monday for the long weekend
TOC tomorrow as I have a medical appoitment in the city- went over the day plan with the students today so there are no surprises
Our day...
daily French- high frequency words and review (doesn't seem to matter how often we go over the same vocabulary) some students seem to have very little recall (perhaps because the are not actively using the language!)
Novel work
time to read, wrtie and answer the reader responses or questions. More students are finishing the novels and are engaged in chosing a final activity to demonstrate their understandinmg of the story, characters and themes.
Just before break I went over tomorrow's day plan so the students are able to make informed decisions when a TOC is in for me tomorrow
Math7 Area, Perimeter and circle geometry
follow up #16 p286 and give the students time to review the unit and the formula for rectangles, triangles, parallelograms, trapeziods and circles. The unit review tomorrow consists of a selection of examples that we have already studied and completed together in class- nothing new. As I have not included any formula on the test I allowed the students to create a 'reminder card' of all the formula to use tomorrow on the unit review as I don't want to test memory but application skills.
Silent Reading/ literacy
We also re-did the "Dancing Raisins" lab with fresher raisins and new baking soda- it did work better but was still a little disappointing as some just floated to the top and sat there- I am not sure that the thunder storm outside had anything to do with the reaction this time! (kidding!)
Science Mystery Powders lab
5 white powders (of the kitchen variety) and their individual reactions to a drop of water, a drop of vinegar and a drop of iodine. The students filled out a reaction chart and more time will be needed this week (Wednesday) to follow this lab up and identify the powders from our guesses today. It was ,considering the technicality of all the directions, an effective and efficient lab. I, of course, had the assistance of Kim (volunteer) who is a great lab partner (and cleaner upper :))
At the end the day, I distributed the class newsletter and we read over it together.
Some things we noticed
- the e-mail address for the photographs for the year end slide should read teaghan_o@hotmail.com underscore between teaghan and o
- I want to clarify that there will be an English program academic award and a French Immersion academic award at the end of the year. The other awards (sports, leadership and Band) are shared by both programs.
- once the commitment form for camp is signed and completed just rip it off the newsletter so you can keep the other newsletter information at home. The packing list in green is for keeping at home to check off the items needed- no need to spend $$$ just beg or borrow items such as sleeping bags and no need for new clothes for camp!
Have a good evening.
Mrs. J.
