Hope to see you at our informal Open House after school- come check out your child's desk and binder organization and see their work first hand, enjoy our bulletin board of Greatness poems and fancifully coloured butterflies, see the room they learn in for the majority of the school day, appreciate out artistry and creative skills on display in the gymnasium and if you would like to see the books available for purchase at the Scholastic Book Fair- just pop down to our school library.
Homework
nothing new- novel reading will do!!!
Reminders
I have been getting grade seven signatures on the grad hoodie logo all week- I think we are very close to finally getting the order to the printers- any grade sevens out there who haven't signed?
Spring Fling dance does depend on parent volunteer support
Is it too late to remind you of the Open House tonight?
Our day...
variety of activities for the sake of getting them conpleted (I am reluctant to start new learning until the majority of students are completed what we ahve already started)
Science ch 4 review and unit vocabulary crossword puzzle
Novel questions and responses to reading
Greatness Poems for display tonight
Art projects on the go...
The students were super silent today- apparently there is a movement to be silent for the 'children who have no voice' (metaphorically) which I though was interesting as I would think that people who need a voice need people to speak up for them! I guess I missed the point but it was a nice couple of quiet hours so I am really not complaining! LOL
Now there is a group wanting sponsored for their silence sending $$ raised to Free the Children- really!
Math 7
I returned the Geometry review from yesterday and the majority of students did a satisfactory job. Approximately 6 will need to complete a redo on the concepts due to not having mastered the concept of how to determine missing angles.
Average % on the concept of finding missing angles: 13/20 or 65%
(scores ranged 19 points from 1/20 to 20/20)
Average % on classification and naming angles, line segments, rays etc.: 15/21 or 71%
(scores ranged 18 points from 3/21 to 21/21)
We started today looking at the formula for finding the area of triangles A= bxh divided by 2
Ch 3.5 p108 - we did a discussion lesson and figured out why the formula worked for the area of a triangle and I asked the studnts to try p. 114-115 # 9, 11, 14, 17 and 19 as a challenge.
I was shocked to find that they were having a challenge working the substitution of the variables into the formula! Thought we'd covered that in algebra but seems we need more practice using the information to form the formula before we can find the area!!
Never a dull moment!
Silent reading wasn't as silent as the morning session but we had lots on the go
Personal Planning
Body Image- we watched about 15 minutes of a half hour video on some of the issues that are heightened during adolescence that can lead to young people having poor self esteem and warped body image. I showed the quick clip from You Tube of the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty which shows how the media and magazine/model industry enhances pictures of and body parts using photoshop and shading and they were amazed. The images we see in the media are not real and yet we (and especially young people compare themselves) want to be 'like them'!
We will finish the rest of the lesson, discussion and video tomorrow.
Buddy class time- we agreed to be the grade 1's 'guinea pigs' so they could practice their presentation skills for the conferences tonight. Everyone did a great job and we finished the day with a 10 minute climb on the new playground equipment.
Dismissal
See you tonight
Mrs. J.
