TGIF April 19th, 2013

We are all tired today but we held a successful Open House and at least he students have a long weekend as Monday is a professional development day.
We will be trying to 'catch up' with our students technologically- they know more than we do about technology and how they learn from it so our day on Monday will be dedeicated to professional learning in the uses of technology in our classrooms.

Homework
  • read your novel (three different novels on the go) - many students have asked me for 'guide questions' for their reading which will be distributed next week.
  • math7 Geometry redo of the first ubit Wed April 24th (approx 10 +) students (a third of the class need to review the basics of finding missing angles)

Reminders
no school Monday April 22
extra band class Tuesday April 23rd
April 24th switch of band class from morning to afternoon and grade 6/7 Band concert 7pm
Due to band concert on Wednesday night I will check to see if the math group still wants to meet after school (there's no reason not to but sometimes so much is going on the focus is all over the place- stay tuned...)
April 25th school class pictures and our annual panorama shot of the whole 'growing' school
April 26th Spirit Day (Decade Day- pick your favourite decade and dress accordingly!) also, Grade 7's have the McCreary Health Survey 11-12 during our usual math time.

Busy week ahead!

Our day today...

Congratualtions are in order for Aiden M. who won an Honourable mention in the local Legion's poster contest with a gift of cash and Lucy L. who also won cash and a certificate for her efforts on this year's entries into the Remembrance Day contest. We are proud of you both and encourage all entrants to hone their creative skills for the next competition in Novemeber.
Nelson Winterburn from the Legion always takes time to come personally to congratulate and photograph the winners. Thank-you for the opportunity to take part in this iimportant contest every year.

Band class 9-9:45am

Personal Planning- completion of the lesson and video that we started yesterday about body image and how the media manipulates us into thinking we are not 'beautiful people'. I had prepared some advertisements from some magazines and we spent about ten minutes trying to decide what they were 'selling' to us- some were surprising like the advert for cheddar chesse that looked like a perfume commercial- a block of chesse was shaped to look like a bottle of perfume!
We had approx. 12 minutes of the video left to watch and it also focused on the manipluation of the media.

math 7 we took this week's geoemtry review quiz and together answered the questions looking at the 'clues' offered by the parallel and intersecting lines.
We completed the work set on p.114 yesterday finding the area of triangles using the formula and following the tricks that are thrown at us like making sure the metric measurement units are the same and splitting larger figures into smaller ones to find the total area.

silent reading

Computer session- finally, we have missed this session the last couple of weeks so I offered free time but I am sitting here doing the blog regretting my decision- some students find it difficult to make good decisions for themselves when they are allowed free time on computers. It has become a social issue as they want to see what everyone else is doing- so much for computers isolating young people!!!

Our HSSS mentors came and have their charges outside in the sunshine.

Art: we have had a lot of art time this week with the preparation for yesterday's Art display and Open House- it is a nice afternoon maybe they will enjoy some time outside!! Yes, they asked for some time together on the hexamid (our spider's web).

Clean up and Dismissal.
Enjoy your long weekend- see everyone on Tuesday.
Mrs. J.
