Late but not as late as last night. Seems this week is just filled with things to do, places to go and people to see...talking of that
This afternoon we had a very poignant guest speaker on Internet Safety called Jesse Miller. He is speaking tonight at 7pm for parents - if you are undecided I would have to recommend his presentation as one NOT to miss- I have heard many speakers over the years and he not only commands the audience but has a message that both students and parents need to hear. You will not be disappointed and it may even be eye-opening what he is able to share with adults. What he shared this afternoon with your children was both timely and rather disturbing! I can only imagine what he will be telling us all tonight. I actually think I may stay on this rainy evening and see him again as a parent and teacher.

Novel choice for Term 3
I like to do literature circles in Term 3 and I had five books for discussion and voting...
I gave a quick idea of the genre and the storyline (but not enough to ruin the story) and then I read the first two or three papargraphs aloud so the students could get a taste of the style and make a decision about which of the five they were interested in reading. Of the five , three made the cut with surprising results
The Egypt Game (no votes)
Tuck Everlasting (no votes)
Francis Rain 3
The Giver 5
Milkweed 16
So there you have our choices- I do think that some students who have chosen the novel called Milkweed may find it too demanding (it is a WW2 Holocaust story set in Warsaw, Poland during the Nazi regime's control ) but I never say never when it comes to novels so that group will be split into three reading groups. We will perhpas get a bit of a start tomorrow but I will be asking them to take them home over the spring break to do some reading (not necessarily get it completed but...)
Lit circles after Spring Break
Band class
Math 7 a half hour in class to get caught up on all the 'chasing our tail' work for transformations and Cartesian graphing from the last two weeks - I haven't yet had the time to sit and assess yesterday's quizzes. I will distribute a list of activities in class Thursday- I haven't made it yet! If it helps I can also post it here???
I see the need to put out a list of what needs to be handed in so students who have been away or are working a bit slower can get themselves up to speed hopefully in tomorrow's class. The students have chosen Friday as a 'cash-in' day for the Busted points (since September we have amassed 80 minutes of points- every time I make an error and the students can correct it or catch it- hmmmm...seems like a lot but in relation to the minutes of teaching time I'm sure it is within 'normal' range) for a movie. It is also Twins day and the day before the vacation- need I say more...Math, meh...not so much!!
The other half of class was spent in the computer lab completing an on-line Mathlinks 7 website chapter 1 quiz. Still room for improvement lots of 50% (students doing things too quickly and not reading the whole question) and also some 80% which is better but that's why we practice. Remember there are many on-line practice sites and not all cost- the one that may be worth a subscription is IXL but students are allowed 20 free questions a day.
Silent reading
good job by most :)
Catch up time - anything incomplete so we can clean out our binders and desks tomorrow for a clean break and start term 3 in earnest in April. Students worked on their art, math, French, short story posters, and a wanted poster for the Leprachauns that have been visiting the school overnight it seems.
Mrs. Lapointe brought the kindies today to look for them (the leprachauns) and one little boy asked me if I was a Scottish version (but that's not what I thought he said!!lol). He looked for pointed ears.
It is so cute and my students play along so well making wanted posters and getting in on the clues that they have visited. HELP was written in green paint on the back window and footprints of tiny green feet adorned some desks. We'll see what tomorrow brings...
2-3pm Jesse Miller spoke to the grade 6 and 7 students about Internet safety and social networking. It was a fabulous presentation and like I said I think he made an impact on some of our YOLO (you only live once) mentality kids that think that it doesn't matter what they do on the Internet.
dismissal came quickly today
we had a baby shower for Mrs. O'Neill in the library- so cute to see her newborn as big as a turkey now only three months
Hope you'll think about coming tonight.
Mrs. J.
