Monday and Tuesday 25 and 26th February

It so easy to get out of the habit of daily posting when things go a little sideways but here we are on Tuesday evening already...

Monday 25th
many thanks to Ms. Poland and Kim, my Monday afternoon volunteer, for keeping things moving smoothly in my absence. Also a special thank-you form the students to our guest trombone specialist Mr. B who is visiting from Ontario and conducted a workshop for euphonium and trombone students- what a great opportunity thanks to Ms. Sorban for organizing that.

Unit 1 vocabulary -Greek and Latin roots and etymology
We did this in place of a spelling test this week. Returned the spelling tests from last week and the resukts are much the same- the majority are achieving 20-22 of a possible 22 and then there is a huge gap and the remainder are having difficulty spelling over 10 or 11 correct (50% or less).
I have tried everyhting I know to help thie students who struggle with words and letter but little has changed in the weekly results. A couple have improved by focussing on half of the spelling list and that is encouraging but ...

SRA reading lab- independent reading activites

Math 7 coordinates and design- introduction to Chapter 1 MathLinks 7- voacbulary and review of plotting points and using ordered pairs
approx 10 students were at the music workshop and missed Math7 today- catch up Tuesday
Good news is that studnts seem to have a good understanding of the concept of this skill

Silent reading

Library book exchange

Personal Planning follow up to the lesson on chices and connsequences- activity has studnets choose a few given scenarios and decide what level of risk engaging in that might be (for example: hitchhiking-getting into a vehicle with someone you don't really know)  and then explain why it is a risky thing to do.

Trans4mation wordsearch
a word and thought activity that engages the brain and the eyes in finding words made up of both letters and numbers- not unlike texting langauge
It was a hit!

Dismissal

Today Tuesday 26th

Homework
Nothing New but...
This weekend I need to complete the Term 2 report cards and assessment of incomplete activites so the students are on notice to hand in the things that they want included no matter how late!!!
I need time to assess it so ASAP is recommended
A list of MIA activites is up in the classroom but students need to follow through.

Reminders
Band tomorrow bring instuments please
Our Bully-Free Pink Day assembly is at 9am
camp forms

our day...

Daily French

Phys Ed Basketball after a fitness run and heart rate warm up
I have noticed much improvement in the team play recently :)

Returned the socials projects today- every student received their own report in a written feedback form so they could understand how the assessment was undertaken. Ask for the report- it will be included in the Term 2 report if your child did not take it home!

Spelling Unit 1 from Monday- needed more time to complete it- still going
those finished with the spelling booklet worked more on the word search activity from yesterday.

Math 7 catch up for the third who missed yesterday.
Ch 1 coordinates and design- focused more on the specialized vocabulary today and provided a couple of crossword puzzles using the definitions we discussed in class- also suggested the text glossary and the chapter 1 notes if they were confused about the terms. The majority of students did a great job.

Also shared a very moving spoken word performance poem about bullying by Shane Koyczan (of 2010 Olympics fame- his poem, We are More, was featured at the opening ceremonies).
This one is called To This Day
http://tothisdayproject.com/

The students were very quiet after it was over and it took a while but they began to discuss its message!

Silent reading

French
bandes designees- cartoon stories that help students read French with visual help and get them to put into an authentic practice the skills of memeory and vocabulary recognition. This one, J'ai Faim, had the students recall vocabulary about food and ingredients for pizza types.
It was challenging but we stuck it out and will follow up the story with activites en francais in the next few days!

time was needed for the activites incomplete yesterday like the personal planning chart and the word search. While the students worked I finally managed to complete the next chapter of the class novel.

pack up, clean up and prep for dismissal.
another day...
have a great evening- gotta go pick up my son
