Sports Day tomorrow- the grade sevens will be in charge of the station events for the family groups we have been part of all year. Come and enjoy.
Homework
none- just get a good night's sleep and come tomorrow ready to lead our 2011 school sports day :)
Reminder that Monday is the due date for the Splashdown Park permission form and payment- other wise I will have to cancel it :(
(I only have four students of 30 signed up)
General Day
Before any discussion of the hockey game and the chaotic aftermath last night in the city of Vancouver, I wrote a statement on the board and the students had to write their opinion and whether they agreed or disagreed with the statement.
Not verbatim but the statement more or less asked them to agree or disagree:
The riot in the streets of Vancouver was not about hockey and would have happened no matter what the outcome.
That way, everyone had something to share- each student shared first with their neighbour (partner) and then we made a speaker's list. The comments were all very heartfelt for and against the statement and they did a great job of respecting each other's opinions even if they didn't agree with them. I felt that some students were holding back their real feelings or opinions. Only one or two were defensive about the activity itself because they said they 'didn't care' because they hadn't watched it.
The encouraging result is that our young people are very aware that this was an ugly and inappropriate response to 'losing' a game. I believe that it was a worthwhile activity.
One of my intentions in doing this was to allow a free flow of ideas and to try not to be at all judgemental about their responses and observations. The kids are all right! They did a great job. Encouraging.
I was reminded of the lyrics from a song by John Cougar Mellancamp...
"Would you teach your chlidren to tell the truth?
Would you take the high road if you could chose?
Do you think your the victim of a great compromise?
Cos I believe you change you mind, you change our lives
Your Life is Now, your life is now, your life is now
in this undiscovered moment, lift your head up above the crowd
We could shake this world if you could only show us how
Your life is now"
The students were encouraged by the thousands of people who came out to clean up the mess and help the municipal workers. They also liked that the mayor said he wouldn't let this shut down the city's right to celebrate.
