December 1st ...it's beginning to look at lot like Christmas!!

I've tried to hold back the Christmas cheer especially since the stores have been playing Christmas music and flogging Christmas paraphernalia since early November (or was it late October?) ;)
Anyway- the blog is a bit late tonight due to the staff meeting after school.
It's difficult to get the students packed up, off the phone, out the door and be ready for a meeting at 3:20pm!!

Homework tonight
Spelling test for Unit 10 tomorrow morning
nothing new otherwise all other work was either collected or checked and assessed today. Approx 7 students have the Unit 10 spelling booklet with the pronoun crossword still to hand in.

A School Newsletter went home with students today
Please sign and return the report card envelopes with the refelction sheet

General Day
Started off with French- we reviewed Gr 5 vocabulary using Mrs. Parker's most recent quiz- interesting results - we played a review game in teams but it turned out that there was usually one or two students who were able to blurt out correct answers although I had asked students to 'confer'- some didn't try. I'd have to do that activity differently next time. We also completed a grade seven French activity on opposite words- les opposites (gros- mince, en haut- en bas, froid- chaud)

Math- checked and corrected together the practice booklet for coordinate graphing- it provides a brief introduction to linear equations. Tomorrow and Friday we will be looking at slides and mirror images using graphing and altering coordinates to create new images.

Language Arts
Computer- word processing and research time to work on and begin the write up for the Virtual Adventure started last week. The students are planning some amazing adventures in some far away lands- it is interesting to see them make their decisions about where and why (with whom) they plan to go. Very productive for the majority of students.

DEAR time- collected the November reading logs and distributed the December reading logs.
before the end of DEAR time I did Unit 8 and Unit 9 (redos for the spelling test)

Socials Chapter 3- the beginnings of 'civilization'- what factors made early humans change from a nomadic lifestyle to one that was more settled? How did early man discover farming? Today we read about three different hypothesis that suggest it was an accidental discovery that grain or seeds grew and produced grain in certain soil. Apparently, science speculates that it was a shortage of food and that by observing the patterns of animals and man's ability to produce (control) a food supply that led our ancestors to more settled living. Next comes the domestication of animals and creation of living areas that are more permanent. Tomorrow we will look more in depth at just how life changed for early humans and led to the first major civilizations in the major river valleys.

Art- Advent Calendar- lots of hustle and bustle- noisy creation? There are a lot of bodies -it seems like such a small space for them to 'spread out' and be creative!!

Phys. Ed. Tried co-ed teams for mini basketball skills and drill today- in future I'd like to keep the girls working with the girls because the boy's play a different type of game (I know it sounds sexist- it is BUT...) it is my job to keep everybody safe and included and there were way too many unhappy girls today!!.

3pm Dismissal Newsletter home.
Stay Dry. See everyone tomorrow.
Mrs. J.
