So sorry that I haven't been on the blog since last Thursday- it seems like a long time. I had a very productive Pro-D day on Friday and have learned more about the AFL (Assessment for Learning) philosophy while making some tangible plans for making more 'direct feedback' a reality in my classroom for my students - it is quite overwhelming when you realize that when you learn more you realize that there is a lot more to learn and so much I don't know!!!
Yesterday my TOC reported a decent Monday which is good news and today I have just finished with the reorganizing of desks and the clean out of Term 1 papers to make room for Term 2. I was finding that the students were becoming a bit messy and were having difficulty finding things I had just handed out !!!! So frustrating as it wastes time getting every duck in a row- don't get me started on the ducks that don't want to get in the row!!! LOL
Here is the homework and then I'll provide a quick run through today in class
Homework
students have an extra night to get this work completed as it was set for last night and not checked today!!
Spelling unit 8 and 9 redo tests for those who need to redo
Math coordinate graphing booklet (some still have to complete the helicopter assignment!)
Unit 10 spelling activity and pronoun crossword
A couple of students still have an outstanding papragraph (noun activity) to hand in
Heads Up
A band letter went home today to explain that the Music company will be at our school on Monday 5:30-7:30pm to rent the musical instruments for the Band program. It is very important that you attend or your child will have to go to Vancouver to rent an instrument if you wish them to participate in the band. Details are explained in the letter.
Report cards for Term 1 please return the envelopes signed with the last page reflection completed. If you were unable to see me for PT interviews and want to chat about your child please just call or e-mail and I can make alternative arrangements. :)
General Day
Some of my students' desks have been needing a good clean out for a couple of weeks. Today we cleaned out all Term1 activities and assignments and made way for the second term work. Hopefully this will help with the organization and care of more recent assignments. The work was shifted into a file folder that I encourage the students to take home- some work will be useful again especially the math and the French worksheets might help for review or memory as some students on a semester system may not be taking math in the first semester which means they don't see a math class for nearly seven months!!!!
Yikes!! Keep up review- the high school math is fast paced.
Music
SRA reading lab. Day 1. Every student used today to check that the starting level is correct for them - some might be too easy and others a bit too challenging. The lab has students reading at their own level from gr 4- grade 7. Every time the students complete three reading selections at a level of 100% on both the language and the comprehension sections, I will move them up a level. The reading lab has selections up to Gr 9. So there is lots of challenge ahead.
DEAR time was used well after we managed to settle- the students do seem to be enjoying the time to choose and read their own selections from the library and class shelves. I won some books from Scholastic last year that really made a difference to what I could offer them in class. Some titles have really been big hits with the students.
Phys Ed. Basketball mini-games- good skills and team work today although if I had been a 'real ref' some of the agressive defensive moves would be called and had some fouled out of the play. The students laughed because I referred to the rebounds as 'leftovers'!!! "Get up for those 'leftovers'"- "Hey Mrs J. you mean rebounds"!!!
ART- soda labels are looking cool- We started the idea of creating ourselves an 'advent calendar'- it is Dec 1st tomorrow so we need to get cracking on it- we need windows to open!!!
Band letter out and explained to students- it is so easy to hand it out but it is not so easy it seems for students to actually get them to where they are supposed to go -HOME- a few were left behind!!
Remider that Friday is our RED and Green spirit day and our annual Christmas card writing day- letters were sent home to parents yesterday- are you getting your mail??????
3pm dismissal
Have a good night- I'm off to the curling rink :) Nothing like playing a game on ice for two and a half hours when it is freezing outside!! Must have been some crazy Scotsman that came up with that idea!!
