Thursday Dec. 2nd - Purdy's orders went home today

You know there are some ends to the school day that I feel I have energy to tidy up and prep for the next day and there are others like today that leave me feeling like the cloth I have just wrung out after spilling a student's OPEN bottle of orange juice!!! The student in question had left early and his bottle was on his desk so I picked it up not realizing that the cap was unsecured!!! I did it to myself.

Homework tonight
Math - graphing 'translations' worksheet (#10.1) to be completed
7 students (names are up in class) have a Unit 10 spelling booklet due
Please return report card envelopes and Term 1 reflection sheets (I only have 6 reflection sheets completed)
Heads Up
tomorrow is our Annual Christmas Card Writing Day- coffee from Starbucks for adult helpers- if you can spare a half hour or twenty minutes you are welcome to join us - there will be cards and the Post Office ladies help us out every year by selling stamps and then taking all the mail with them for mailing.
Purdy's Orders went home today (make sure you get the chocolate from your children!!)
RED and GREEN spirit Day too in case you wonder why they are dressed in those colours for school tomorrow!!

Musings of a wrung out teacher!!
The Purdy's Christmas orders went out today and it is all I can do NOT to open the bag as I sit here doing the Blog. :) If I got into the chocolate now there might not be any left in an hour!! lol

Thank-you for the feedback and encouragement to keep up with the blog- it is one of those things that tends to take on a life of its own once you have started as some people start to check it and then wonder why it is not updated by a certain time- sorry folks there is so much going on some evenings that I have been getting to the computer later than I would like. However, I am updating it every day so if nothing is up when you check it, just check back a bit later!! It's so ironic - I want people to use it and read it and share our day (and by the feedback, more people are using it which is great) but now I need to keep in mind that there is an expectation that there will be a Blog entry by a certain time. I think it is a good dilemma but then again a part of me wonders if I've set myself up for scrutiny with good intention!!! C'est la vie.

Regarding Term 1 student reflections - the experiment of sending home the Term reflection for completion at home was a big flop- tomorrow I will be having the students complete them in class as I only have 6 returned. My intent is to have the students take a look and give a bit of personal thought into their Term 1 achievements and plan for Term 2 which is now already underway by two weeks.

Is it the weather, the time of year or is it the beginning of hormonal limbic system dysfunction? I am referring to the genral 'unrest' of the students as a group- I think some of you would be taken aback at the general direspect that seems to becoming a daily phenomenon. There seems to be issues with impulse control this last couple of days that has led to some challenging classes and poor decision making. I have appealed to the class community for a recognition of the issues in the hope that we can address them as a class and as a group. I'll keep you posted!!

General Day in class
Started with the Unit 10 spelling test
Activity on pronouns and antecedents- making the antecedent and pronoun agree when using words like: anybody, somebody, neither, several etc.
Music
Math- started the graphing of 2-D shapes and using a translation (slide) of the points we created a 3-D figure on a Cartesien graphing plane. The students seemed to really like the results of this activity- I heard lots of "cool" comments :) We started a practice skills worksheet which is set for completion this evening.
DEAR time- used very well once we settled (that is getting better too:))

Personal Planning Term 2 focus for Personal Planning is timely- it will be about making decisions and following through with them- understanding the role that peer pressure plays and using knowledge about personal skills and how to use them to their best advantage. Today we discussed the issues we have been dealing with this week and I introduced two resources 1/ TLC - Teen Life Choices and another booklet which I hope to have enough of to give one to each students called 2/ Respect Yourself. The students requested a Question Box and would like to have a chance to do class meetings to work out some of the in- class issues.

Socials- We revisited the booklet distributed yesterday and looked at the progression from Paleolithic to Neolithic life. The students (some of them) found the information about the races of mankind very amusing due to my pronunciation of words like Caucasoid and Australoid). Go figure.
We did a partner activity next which asked the students to determine what life might have been like for early humans who did not have the basic necessities of fire, language, farming, domestication of animals etc.

In the middle of this activity the grade seven class was asked if they would like to help set up the gym for our annual writing day tomorrow and thank you to all who jumped at the chance to go use the inventions of tables, chairs and wheels to get out of class and help tranform the gymnasium into a writing grotto :)

There was not enough time to fit in art at the end of the afternoon- so I will schedule some time tomorrow afternoon perhaps with some hot chocolate and candy canes for good measure. That should be nice if I don't spill it all over the floor!!!
Dismissal 3pm
Have a nice evening- see you all for writing day tomorrow.
Mrs. J.
