TGIF another beautiful day in Squamish

I am enjoying the extension of the summer weather although the heat generated by the 28 of us in the classroom can be overwhelming (think stink!!) by the afternoon. Enjoy the sun and the light as the days will soon shorten now that it is October. Thanksgiving is just around the corner.

We had an interesting and positive Friday.

Homework
A unique homework assignment for the weekend!! I have asked the students to talk to you and take some notes about what they were like a a baby- they are researching their life story for a social studies activity which will see them create an autoboigraphy of their personal past.
Reminders for
verification forms
t-shirt orders
overdue asignments (students who were away)
some students have their spelling words for test #2 to re-study for a redo test on Monday

General Day
I returned spelling test #2 and was really impressed that of 27 students 15 scored between 10 and 12 out of 12. Fantastic. Another 8 passed scoring from 6-9 out of 12- the remaining students will redo the test Monday and will study for it this weekend.

Matt and Brooke did a fabulous job of introducing our guest entertainer Teddy Anderson. He was a hoop dancer from the Whitehorse area of BC and was amazing with the hoops that he used to tell his stories and share his dances. At one point he was dancing with 30 hoops. His message was very inspiring. Essentially he wanted us to celebrate how we need to embrace all cultures and races to form our world and not accept hatred and racism.
His dances were very energetic and he had the students up trying his moves. The students all seemed to enjoy it and were entusiastic about his performance. we were able to take his message back into our class to discuss his comments about not aiming for perfection but embracing enough humility (and rigour) to practise skills that move us to improving our personal best.

After snack we held our first class community meeting. I'd like to make an effort to hold a similar session once a month. The students did well for a first run through the procedure- they were respectful and I was impressed with their forthrightness and ability to express both their frustrations and the things they are enjoying. We discussed and shared our ideas about: September's class management and organization, possible fieldtrips and year-end ideas (including thoughts about fundraising), gum chewing and last but not least any positive or frustrating issues from the month.
I have lots of notes and some good discussion took place. The students were very clear with each other about what they would like to continue working at and what they would like to see stop. The gist of the concern was focussed on the interruptions to our learning and instruction by a small number of students. The good vibrations came from our ideas for meeting goals and planning some fieldtrips and celebrations. :)

After lunch we made some time for DEAR and I caught up with a few students to remind them about what they owed for assignment s and overdue work.so they know who thay are.

Next was some time for finding homes for all 'homeless papers" and updating our binder indexes.

For social studies we started into the chapter that introduces the students to the concept of an individual past. We will be researching for a personal autobiography presentation next week.
We followed this up in our computer class- today the students used the d'Marie time capsule website to find out what day they were born and what happened on that day. You should try it yourself- I found out all sorts of interesting information about the day I was born. The price of gas in 1961 was 31 cents a gallon!!
Deifenbaker was the prime minister and the number one song was The Lion Sleeps Tonight!!

Good end to a busy week. Have a great weekend.
Mrs. J.
