Math Cross- a puzzle check on computation skills
Novel The Giver, we discussed the idea of a reader's response assignment then we did one together as I read chapter 5. The response is an opportunity to respond with personal comments and observations about the story rather than answer questions set by an outside perspective.
Example As I read ch 5 I noted that...
- Jonas (lead character) had a dream to share at breakfast time which is unusual for him as he hasn't really shared many of his dreams
- His dream was a sure sign that he was attracted to Fiona (a fellow classmate) and was moving into puberty
- His parents exchanged glances and when his mother told him he would have to now take 'pills' that would control his 'stirrings' I had goosbumps on my arms
- I was shocked that Jonas accepted the idea he would have to now take medication for the rest of his life to supress his hormones but realized he didn't know anything else and he actually felt proud of it (part of the 'club')
- I was saddened by the end of the chapter when Jonas tried to hold ont the good feelings of 'wanting' but the pill started to take effect and he could not remember it
DEAR time - Mrs. Parker 'borrowed' four students for today's silent reading time and was very excited about how productive they were with coaching some grade fives with their reading progress. I would like to encourage other grade sevens to take this leadership role. I will ensure the volunteers will still get their own time for reading (i.e. we can build up a roster of readers and different readers can assist on different days) I really think this kind of reading pairing/coaching will help everyone involved.
I also set up the CD of chapter 6 for six students who listened to the chapter for homework and started their notes during silent reading time- I see it as still being silent listening while they are reading the book to the story (my CD is the full story as it appears in the novel :))
French the questions 5 w's and H en francais Qui? Que? Pourquoi? Quand? Ou? Comment? (and Combien? how many? review of the questions and their uses in both languages!!
Personal Planning we went over some organizational procedures for homework and organized our agendas and read over the newsletter to parents so thet they are aware that I am telling you what I have told them about our daily procedure- that way there might be less blame game and everyone will be aware of the expectations.
Phys Ed. Today we did some body warm up exercises and reviewed the volleyball volley and bump in small groups of five or six. Still working on time and responses to the whistle both fpor safety and insrtruction/direction. Getting a teeny tiny bit better at the time lapse but we are moving in a positive direction at least :)
Dismissal 3pm
Students know that I will be away from class tomorrow at a workshop at our local board office.
I'll see everyone on Wednesday. Be respectful to our visiting teacher (TOC) and remember that
" people might not remember your name but they will never forget how they were treated"
Have a nice evening Mrs. J.
