Thursday, busy Thursday!

Can you believe- the last day of September already and what a scorcher it was! This afternoon was a hot one in the classroom and some students were feeling wiped out.
The odd sleepy wasp that finds its way into our class is met with such a great hulabaloo that it quickly tries to find its way out asap!!

Homework
No new homework tonight BUT the following is overdue and expected tomorrow by a few students who know who they are...

1 Parent-contact form
1 Behaviour Reflection sheet
1 journal from Wednesday's class
4 Ch 3/4 novel question assignment for The Giver
some older assignments from students who missed a day (I'll be catching up with them tomorrow at recess)
finally- are you ready?- 22 personal Planning assignments from LAST Friday- last day to hand in tomorrow

General Day
RCMP Officer Marc Brown conducted a 45 minute session with the students this morning and among other things reminded them about the DARE program (Define /Assess/ Respond /Evaluate)
Music with Mrs. McPhee was next
After snack we did Spelling Test #2 and a Parts of Speech Quiz (I allowed the students to use their notes)
Next we followed up the class representative forum and had the top three boys and girls present their speeches for class votes. I was impressed with how well each student did. We voted and named Callista and Navdeep as class reps and their back up classmates are Matt P. and Brooke.
FIRE DRILL next (we knew about this one so it wasn't a shock and the weather for being outside was spectacular :)
with that the morning disappeared!!!
At DEAR time I allowed students who needed some time to catch up on missed or late work- I can provide time but once again that time has to be used wisely!
I switched around the afternoon- instead of atttempting math (missed from this morning) I provided a half hour for art and we looked at the lines and patterns associated with drawing the human body - a big padded body in the form of a football player. Many did a really good free hand sketch and managed to keep body proportions realistic.
For an introduction to Social Studies today we looked at and discussed what we know sbout the place called Stonehenge. The connections between its use today and in ancient times are surprisingly similar. The social studies program will have the students analyse and examine our individual and collective pasts, the development of civilization and specifically look at the ancient river civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, India and China. We started Chapter 1 : Connections with the Past.
As a class we brainstormed the agenda for our first class meeting which will take place tomorrow after our guest Hoopdancer.
Topics for inclusion were as diverse as health matters at lunch and snack, bathroom visits, interruptions by classmates, transitions, celebrations and possible year-end activities.
Agenda and pack up next so we could make up the missed Phys Ed. time form Wednesday and we played a class game in the undecover area- wow they can be loud!! However, I think everyone seemed to enjoy the movement and activities.
Friday tomorrow. See everyone then. Thanks to Brooke and Matt for agreeing to introduce our guest tomorrow- Ted Anderson- a hoop dancer from Salteaux- looking forward to the performance.
Have a wonderful night.
Mrs. J.
