Oh boy...
Holy Hannah! Hang onto your hat- the pot (see Tuesday's metaphor!) is boiling dry!!!
I'm thinking it might be hormones but we needed a couple of 'stop & think' sessions today (I might have talked too long during the first one or we wouldn't have needed a second one!)
Anyway- I guess we are all in it together and this is the point I was trying to get them to appreciate- we need to hold it together for another month before they can start to sprout their high school wings.
There is some silliness that is impacting the general tone of the class and making it a challenge to direct and teach so if the 'stop & think' is not enough to correct the disruption then I will need to be more effective in managing the situation(s) before problems arise.
I was humbled during our class meeting when one of the students said, "The students who need to hear it aren't listening"! Out of the mouths of babes (actually not so much- they really are young men and women now).
There was great excitement too today as the Track & Field team left for Whistler for this year's District Meet. I am so happy that they will have better weather than we had for our practice yesterday!! Good luck to all.

Math re-test
FYI it was exactly the same test as last time. I asked the students to show evidence of how they solved the examples so I could be sure that they didn't just memorize the numeric answers. Half of the class including students who missed it last Thursday re-did the test. This time I was able to identify very clearly who is still in need of assistance with this concept and it is a number sense issue not a geometric one. Interesting.
The other students not re-writing worked on practicing creating and using a formula to find the area of a parallelogram (text book based information)
it is always a challenge to have two completely different activities in class
early lunch and changing into track gear (I thought the T&F students were leaving at noon but they left at 12:15pm- next time I should listen more carefully to the announcements!!)
Physical Education with Mr. Parker
DEAR time
Socials Studies
a British documentary (a 25 minute video), The Purple Triangles, which features the surviving members of a German family who resisted Hitler and, despite the persecution of them because of their conviction as Jehovah's Witnesses, managed to remain strong and stand up for their beliefs.
It helped us answer a couple of our class questions: it wasn't just Jewish people who were persecuted and people did resist Hitler and survive.
We tried a brief discussion but an off-topic question kind of caused a bit of a drama (stop & think session #2). This stop & think session ended with one of the students sharing with the class that our 'sessions' aren't changing behaviour so we're just flapping our gums (that's polite language for give it up Mrs. J. you are nagging!!!)
Luckily it was the end of the day...
There's always tomorrow... Reminder about the Science Olympics
Hoodies $25
T&F will return by approx. 7pm
Have a great evening
Mrs. J.
