Wednesday April 21st

Way to go Miss Emily- winning the School Spelling Bee. The grade five runner-up also did an amazing job of keeping his concentration as the gym became louder and the spellers whittled down to the last two. We had 50 entries this year!
Some very impressive spellers (especially the brave primary students who took part) kept us on the edge of our seats with their spelling skills.
I remember when my grade four teacher explained to the class that we would never forget the unusual spelling of Wednesday if we simply could remember that it was the day (day) the Loch Ness (nes) monster was married (Wed)!!!! Wed-nes-day [I did grow up in Scotland]
My students just look at me like I have drool running down my chin when I tell them this amazing recollection. I still think it is a very cool study/ memory strategy to create neumonics and stories to help remember things like spelling and facts.

Camp fundraising: Mr Cadman had managed to organize a table set up outside the B.C, Liquor store this Saturday April 24th. The students have made a sign and they are going to set up a table to see if they can get a few donations. If there are any interested parents or some students with a couple of hours, we would like to ask for your support. You don't need to sing or anything-
but we may ask you to hand out a token wrapped candy for a donation or two :)
Also the students are drafting a letter for the PAC group at the school to request a donation for subsidizing students and parent volunteers.

Homework
plan a litterless lunch for tomorrow's challenge
bring those pennies please
finish the 'table-top' (French)
complete the "determining unknown angles" worksheet (most did it in class)

General Day
The students really got into a vocabulary/ word search puzzle which highlighted the vocabulary of geometry and had them find a secret message about Pythagorus- I am pleased to report that every student finished it and that is worth reward (perhaps some Tim Bits tomorrow)

Math- we finished the identification and practice of the patterns and rules of angle size on a transversal and the students practiced the skills of identification on an activity in which they had to determine the unknown angle. Most did very well and a big shout of thanks goes out to the students (they know who thay are) who finished it pretty quickly and them became tutors for their group members who were having more difficulty.
I did get a chuckle though when one student said to another- "How come you are asking how to do that when the teacher just spent 10 minutes telling us ?" touche

Just before lunch we spent 10-15 mins working on the table tops for the French skits.

Lunch- the soccer field was closed today and everyone found other things to do- go figure!

1-2:15pm The annual school Spelling Bee took place in the gym this afternoon. 50 participants took part and the Bee was 'won' by Emily. However, I want to let you all know how proud I am of all the students that took part. Matt, Navdeep, Gerwin, Amrit, Sarah, Isaac and Raj. I hope they will all continue to participate in opportunities like this next year.

2:15 we discussed what a litterless lunch looks like and took on the challenge to bring one tomorrow

2:15-2:50 ART the students had been sitting on the floor for so long this afternoon we tried to do art 'standing up'!! It was interesting (and quite different). We all survived.
Dismissal
Reminder that Friday is Hot Lunch Day as well as Earth Day.
See everyone Thursday.
Mrs. J.
