I am usually not at a loss for words when I start these blogs but tonight I am having some difficulty trying to get started. Perhaps it was all the staff meeting information - we have a very busy March!!
Homework
Unit 18 spelling test - Thursday
read the novel Dragon Keeper (about 12 students have not finished)
complete the multiply and divide integers worksheet we started in class (I provided class time this afternoon but I also noticed that some students didn't take it home!!)
Ensure parents have received the March 8th meeting information
Just a heads up- tonight the boys took home permission letters and a schedule for floor hockey
tomorrow I need to remember about the hot lunch forms which are due back Friday!!
There are lots of forms and information- sorry, but better to have it than be wondering what is going on.
As for the meeting on Monday March 8th, I do realize that it is not a suitable evening for some parents and do not want you to worry about missing it. I will do a special blog about our Camp discussion and decisions regarding any fundraising ideas. I will also keep track of the questions asked and the responses made by the principal of Don Ross, Christine Perkins. For those non-blog readers I will provide a highlight bulletin.
It has been tricky trying to find a night to meet especially with my curling schedule two nights a week.
General Day
journal write- students had a choice of topics and surprised me with their ability to take a very cryptic topic and actually write more than I expected. I intended to have them discover how difficult it is to write on a topic that asks a question like "If you could spend a long weekend anywhere in the world..." without discussion. However, some students actually said they thought it was 'fun' (SHhhhh) so I guess sometimes pre-writing discussion is over-rated!!! :)
Spelling- test tomorrow Unit 18 words
Language- use of the contraction apostrophe versus the possessive apostrophe.
French- cuisine- moving into a look at the vocabulaire for food and designing a fridge and freezer that holds all the staples and then some - a work booklet with vocabulary was provided but I also want to encourage students to use their dictionnaires to find some food words that will be unique to their tastes. We discussed cultural foods specifically traditional French cuisine- some had tried pate, frog's legs, snails and cheese curd (poutine).
Math: dividing integers and putting the skills of multiplying and dividing integers together- was more productive today due to the fact that the trick for dividing integers is the same as taught for multiplication (odd = negative/even= positive). We analysed the Distributive Law showing the connection between multiplying and dividing. So
72 divided by 9 = 8 and 72 divided by 8= 9 and 9 x 8= 72
DEAR reading time - great session very encouraging when the whole class reads
Science: Earth's Crust- Earthquakes -Chapter 9:2 Fill in the worksheets on the information read yesterday (Types of fault lines and movements that create earthquakes and understanding P waves and physical consequences) and designing buildings that can withstand earthquakes- engineering (some really interesting ideas- some a bit unrealistic of course but we discussed five main damage results [foundation/structural damage, fire, flood, electrical/gas and windows] from earthquakes to try to help design a building to mitigate the damage).
Art: we have a number of projects that need a little bit of time to finish so we worked on the posters and Egyptian profiles.
The dismissal bell came very quickly- I never seem to have enough time at the end of the day.
See everyone tomorrow.
Mrs J.
