it would have to be called Thoughtful Thursday!

HI folks
an indoor lunch time always makes for an interesting afternoon!!

Homework
focus is still on social studies project for a couple more days.
I hope that not loading up on all sorts of other work will help students realize they have no excuse for not being successful in progressing on the modern day (gr6) and Ancient civilization (Gr7) socials projects.

General Day
The earthquake inHaiti was on our minds and we have decided with the suggestion from Mrs Paxton and a great idea from Mrs Fanzega that we will work to promote a fundraiser in our school for the Haiti Unicef fund by having a Hats for Haiti day which we will pay $2 for the priviledge of wearing our hats all day :) The kids were very supportive in our class so now I think it will be an easy sell to the other classes.

Spelling test for Unit 13 completed

I returned the math 'transformations' review which I marked last night- the students were actually excited to get them back- it was only 5 questions and the average mark as 3/5. Some are still struggling with the concepts particularly rotation and now I know who needs a bit of TLC. We went over the answers in class together

Music with Mrs. McPhee

More math - problem solving math multiple choice style - students did 12-15 minutes independently (6 questions) and then we exchanged and marked together. We also went over some exam taking tips on how to manage 40 questions in 40 minutes!!! We completed a pattern problem and many students needed to be reminded about how initially a problem may sound or seem overwhelming - the first thing that's natural is to panic or tell yourself "no way". However, by 'bite sizing' it and dealing with just a section at a time often patterns arise and repeat and the key to getting a problem solved quickly and accurately is really in the confidence of application of these steps...
1) read the info and directions- what is the question?
2) use the info available to establish a method for finding the answer- what will the method be?
3) apply the method and show or do work necessary to find the answer- the process of the aritthmetic- obviously be accurate
4) find and state the answer clearly (even if your not 100% sure it is right!!)

indoor lunch- boy's basketball practise.

Physical Education- with Mr. Parker

DEAR time- took a while to settle.

2:15pm- 3pm We had a very much needed class community meeting and I was both overwhelmed and encouraged by the issues that came forward and were shared by the students with thier peers and me. It takes a lot of guts to feel comfortable to address the issues that are upsetting you especially at this age but the students were very honest and did not name names but did manage to explain their top concerns and issues that have been upsetting them in class and out (as it seems that some have been experiencing harrassment over the internet and their social networking sites. WOW. As you can imagine some were feeling a little uncomfortable and others managed to apologise for behaviour that was shared as upsetting but I think everyones of us had a chance to both listen and share our own concerns. Hopefully our next step as a class community is to set about changing the habits we have fallen into.
We will need to continue discussion tomorrow because I think we were just opening up (and there are other things to discuss like the Haiti fundraiser, the Olympics and Camp!!!) when the afternoon bell went and everyone (especially me!!!) was in a panic about getting packed up for the day when the girls' had a basketball game to get to at Mamquam!!

Well we all survived and lived to tell the tale. Hope the girl's team is having a good basketaball game.
Gotta run.
Mrs. J.
