TGIF It's Friday :)

If I had today to do over again, I would probably have stayed home and felt sorry for myself- I had a bad fall at curling last night and landed on my tailbone which was rather stiff and sore today- I think I was a bit grumpy (less patience?) but for the most part the students helped me out by at least being somewhat sympathetic and giving me lots of good advice and ideas on how to get better. So nice to know they have their hearts in the right place. So I am glad I came after all :)

Homework
This is the last weekend for the "meat and potatoes" of the socials project!!
It is due Wednesday of next week

General Day
Did some partner ball handling skills and offense/defense practise for basketball
for DPA this morning. I was a bit stiff but managed to at least give an idea of what the drills looked like.

We continued our class meeting discussion and chose Jan 27th as the Hats for Haiti day- the students will pay $2 to wear their hats in school all day that Wednesday.

Social studies time was provided and many are making really solid progress. I do have concerns about a few others but I guess I need to just back off and let them do what they are going to do (or not do), I know it is not because I haven't provided time, guidance and assistance. I find it difficult to allow for underachievement!!! However, I can't do it for them either. So que sera, sera!!

11-12 today we looked at test taking writing and how to write an extended essay on a given topic without getting into a total panic. Today we focused on topics and the brainstromng process. I provided four topics and the students created webs about what they might possibly write about- then we shared and discussed the specifics of ensuring the body of the written piece has enough depth or content to be extended into a longer informal essay. Many had very creative ideas but not all were able to sustain 3-5 paragraphs on those ideas. Next week we will do the actual essay using the outlines discussed today.

another indoor lunch but the grade sevens had basketball to run off some energy

DEAR time

took a few minutes to explain our "shish, boom, bah" events in anticipation of the Olympics- a very creative teacher committee devised a fun 'mini-olympics' that is silly but serious fun :) We 'open' our ceremonies next week on Tuesday Jan 19th. The students remembered the last time we did this for the Olympic games in Torino, Italy and considering they were in grade two and three, it must have been memorable.

Computer time (I remembered the correct time this week- had some help!!) our final sessiom at computers before the socials project is due.

Finshed up with some art.

FYI a District and a Teacher Association information bulletin/package went home tonight with the grade sevens regarding FSA- the government's Foundation Skills Assessment. We are in disagreement about the importance of these particular tests but the testing will be conducted throughout the next few weeks starting Jan 21st this year. The politics of it is to keep the issue of the inappropriate use of the test results by the Fraser Institute in the forefront. Ask me if you would like more information.

Have a great weekend (hope it is at least a little bit SUNNY)
See everyone Monday.
Mrs. J.
