It was also a big day for students being off feeling ill- there were 9 students away today which makes it a challenge to catch them up with all the activities and missing instruction. However, I'd rather they were all well first :)
Homework
I nearly forgot to remind student about the spelling test but thanks to an observant stuent (who wasn't distracted by the bell) I sent the message by 'word of mouth' down the stairs with the students SO Spelling Test for Unit 6
Novel Project - independent project activities
BEDMAS worksheet for math- which I think most student handed in at the end of the day (everyone managed to get a start on it)
Reminders
Boy's volleyball game at Garibaldi Highlands Thursday
Carnival 5-7 pm at the school
Day in General
- the students and I spent a little bit of time organizing ourselves for the next few days- today at lunch six student stayed in to carve our class pumpkins and did a fantabulous job too. Another group of four worked with Mrs Hoyrup's class to carve their pumpkins too- I haven't yet seen the results but it all worked out very well. On Friday afternoon we are planning a movie called The Day After Tomorrow which (although a little hyped for Hollywood) is about the effects of global warming and it fits in with our current science learning outcomes. The student have started a sign up to bring some munchies and I will be making everyone a hot chocolate (maybe some cookies).
- I managed to have a computer session this morning with the class and had the opportunity to introduce them to two invaluable free on-line programs that will save them tons of time and have them producing professional looking activities. One is http://www.discoveryeducation.com/ which has a puzzlemaker capacity that I am encouraging students to use. The other is a creative manipulation of specific words called a work cloud and it is at http://www.wordle.net/. I have encouraged students to use it for a bonus activity.
- After snack we started looking at the rules of order of operations (BEDMAS) and what was really interesting is that for our pre-instruction examples the student came up with SIX different answers!! That's why you will always find that those competition skill-testing answers (before you win a million dollars) are always BEDMAS type questions. When you follow the steps it makes sense but the key is to ensure step by step the arithmetic part of the math is in ORDER and for some that is not as easy as it sounds.
- For science this afternoon we looked at the three types of rock classifications and a bit more in depth at igneous rock and how it was formed. tomorrow we will continue with sedimentary and metamorphic rock types and Friday morning we will complete the chapter (Chapter 7) with an open book review test.
- I shared with them an acronym THIEVES which is very useful for studying from non-fiction or content area texts. The acronym alerts readers to the main ideas (concepts) of a chapter. T titles/H headings/I illustrations/E every first sentence (usually is a topic sentence)/V visuals/E end of chapter questions/S summary.
- At the end of today for our art time students worked on various projects for language arts, French and art- we have haunted houses, posters, games boards, jeopardy games, acrostics and mosaics on the go and it is a busy room. With so many away it still seemed crowded.
- Thank you to Cassandra (our CYW child youth care student from Douglas college) as she helped a small group of students who were struggling with the math today and worked with them in the library ubtil everyone seemed to grasp the BEDMAS rules.
Another productive day. Have a good night- everyone get well soon and I'll see you Thursday.
Mrs J.
