Had an interesting Personal Planning (Health and Career) activity today which had some of the students giggling and maybe feeling a bit embarrassed in a general sense because we have started to take a look at decision making when it comes to friendships and relationships.of all kinds!!
Homework
Independent Novel project: the only new homework is for the novel project. The students each have four independent activities they have chosen themselves to complete in the next two weeks. I have suggested that each student 'advance' the novel project by planning at home and carrying out the plan the next day in class time.
Any overdue activities ASAP (a small number of students have some outstanding work to complete and submit for assessment)
Reminders
girl's volleyball tonight
boys v/b Thursday
carnival Thursday
Remembrance Day competition due date Nov 18th
General Day
- students had apporoximately an hour for work on their independent activities for the class novel in class this morning. The completed work is due November 9th, 2009.
- I introduced the local competition information in a bit more detail for the Remembrance Day poster and literary entries. Last year about seven of last years' grade sevens won anywhere from $5 to $100 for their efforts in the contest. I will be encouraging entries again this year. Categories are in the poster competition a) black and white poster or b) full colour poster illustaring the themes of Remembrance Day. In the literary category, a poem and/or essay which deals with the themes of Remembrance Day are acceptable. There are three different age categories and fortunately grade 6/7 falls into the middle category so they are not competing with high school students. Due date for interested students is November 18th, 2009.
- I started a read aloud novel called Word Nerd by Susin Neilsen (it is a funny- serious look at the life of a grade seven student who is plauged by bullies and poverty and the bonus is it is set in Vancouver :)) so far the students seem to enjoy it - I will make an effort to fit it in for 10-15 minutes a day (two chapters). I can tell if the students like it oif they ask for the next chapter if I happen to forget!!
- Today in math I checked on the divisibility homework and we reviewed the correct answers - quite a few students need to get a little more serious about making a better effort to complete homework. We practiced more prime number factor trees for which a knowledge of divisibility rules is necessary. Everyone seems to be 'getting it'.
- the hauted houses are fantastic- now need to get the Francais vocabulaire on to them- I think you'd be amazed at the detail of the art work (just have to remind them it is also a French assignment)
- P.Ed. with Mr.P this afternoon seems to be a highlight for the class
- We did a personal planning activity called How's the Weather?- an activity that encourages decision making. We only managed to get it started today but the discussion among the students was most interesting. The weather is used as a metaphor for risks or possible risks that can be the result of certain activities realated to personal relationships and situations. Maybe ask your son or daughter to tell you the issues that were discussed today.
As I said busy, interesting, productive and enjoyable day. More Wednesday.
Have a good evening and enjoy the sunny weather :)
Mrs J.
