NO SCHOOL FRIDAY provincial pro-d day Oct 23rd (Take Friday off-have a long weekend)

Day in general
The students enjoyed a visit from Mrs Paxton and she read them a couple of stories. They wanted more of course but the cat (me) came back.
I introduced an example of a 'novel' novel assignment for individual projects that I will be giving out for students to choose three to show their understanding of the novel; the main thing is to have the novel finished of course. It is always easier to tell who is and who isn't familiar with the story when individual assignments are done!!
During math we practiced more exponents and scientific notation and I gave a clear idea of the review test contents. I have asked the students to study and complete a practice sheet for bonus marks.
For socials we did an entertaining assignment based on the day we were born on a web site called www.dmarie.com/timecap you should try it out. On the day I was born, the number one movie was West Side Story (love it) and Diefenbaker was the prime minister of Canada (JFK in the USA). Stamps cost 4cents and one of the top songs was Runaround Sue by Dion. Sonny Bono and John McEnroe were born on this day too (fiesty folks!!!) Prize for any parent who can guess when I was born- you have enough clues. Anyway, the students did their own time capsules and are in the process of creating "Day I was Born" maps. It was kind of fun. Shhhh.
We did new name plates for the desks and I introduced the contests for Remembrance Day. Last year about five students won between $10 and $50 locally for their posters and poems and one (the poem) won a provincial prize of another $50. So I want to encourage all students to enter again this year.
It was a productive day- a few behaviour hiccoughs out in the yard but hopefully we can redirect the negative behaviour and help the overall atmosphere both in class and in the school in general.
Have a fantastic evening.
Mrs J.
