October 22nd, 2009

Sorry folks- I am blogging from home tonight as I went to Mamquam to watch the end of the boy's volleyball games. They played three and won two. So , yeah!! Go, Squamish, both the boy's and girl's teams had successful volleyball season starts.

Homework this weekend is only for those students who are behind (which is only about 6-10 students) the majority of students have a homework free weekend because they have been keeping up and working hard. I decided not to give the novel project booklets out until Monday.

Homework for those needing to catch up

complete the reading of the novel- last four chapters
the Stonehenge journalism paragraph
Questions for Ch 21-26 (novel)
map #9 countries of North America
any incomplete math worksheets
*** check your binder if you have been away for any work that might be started but not 100% completed !!*** [ I'm missing a few older assignments for French and Personal Planning]

Day in general

  • We started the day with the Unit 5 spelling test and I was finally able to get (remember) the Unit 4 test done too. Thanks to Amrit for marking the 4 Unit 4 redos.
  • What was I thinking? Our classes turn for pictures this Photo day interrupted the math test. I am not sure that I can count the test as a 'test' mark except for a small number of students. It seemed to me that many students did not study and were unable to transfer their math learning to the wording of the test. I ended up having to put definitions on the board and reminding students what to do - this is not a true test score!!! I intend to make the reviews for math smaller after each learning unit- that way it is not so much memory re-call. The test today was four pages and one complete page was an exact copy of an assignment we had completed together in class. Then there was the interruption. Only three students finished it (one in 20 minutes!!!)
  • I read a story aloud to the class today called, Rose Blanche. It is a very poignant and thoughtful story about a little girl who tries to bring food to help the children who she discovers behind the babed wire of a concentration camp in Germany. We had a fabulous discussion about the circumstances of the Jewish and other persecuted peoples of Germany and Europe during the war. I was impressed with the general knowledge that the student had about this time in history- most knew what the Holocaust was and many students found the story moving- I guess it didn't help when I got emotional just reading it!!!!
  • Music with Mrs McPhee was in the morning. She thought they sang very well :) and our band 'jammers' jammed in the music class at lunch time.
  • Phys. Ed. with Mr. Parker is still concentrating on volleyball.
  • After reading time, there wasn't much time left so we cleaned and packed up earlier than usual. The boy's were excited about their game at Mamquam tonight. I swear the kids have more energy at the end of the day just when I am feeling tired.
  • We took a class vote for the three classmates who would be representing our class at a meeting with the principal on Tuesday afternoon next week. Mrs Paxton would like to have a forum with the students to discuss personal responsibility. The students have voted for Chris, Emily and Huntington to attend the meeting on our behalf.
  • Bon Voyage to Gerwin and his family who are going to the Phillipines on a family vacation- have fun and e-mail us here in chilly Squamish.

Remember tomorrow is a pro-d day across the province- don't come to school there will be no-one here!! Have a fabulous long weekend (I'm jealous). See everyone on Monday. Can you believe it is the last week of October next week? Wow, where did October go?

Mrs. J.
