First Day of new classes :)

Wednesday September 9th

Today we organized our new classes for the year. Our class is a split 6/7 group with 5 grade sixes and 24 grade sevens for a total of 29 students.

Today was more organizational than curricular but we managed to get through quite a bit of information and enjoyed some group activities.

The students completed an All About ME (them) worksheet to give me a bit of information about them and their favourite subjects etc. I then had a power point presentation to introduce the routines by which I set up my class during which the students practised their note taking skills. I was impressed by the participation.

After break, we did a group activity to allow the students input to the classroom agreements which are LISTEN, respond, respect and enjoy. In poster format the students had a chance to put their own ideas and insights into what these agreements might mean for us as a group. The results were interesting! I will create a master copy that we can all read together.

I will be conducting some Diagnostic tests (not for marks) to give me an idea of their level in different curricular areas. Today we did a spelling test (tomorrow mathematics).

After noon we discussed supplies and necessities for learning and I introduces the bin of school supplies that they can win in a random draw when they return the parent page of the newsletter they received today. Planners were distributed.

For DPA we played a couple of games learned at Camp Summit just to give them a brain break form the stuffy classroom (in the undercover area). Before home we began a partner puzzle using letters and numbers to 4MUL8 (formulate) words- it is meant to work both sides of the brain!!

Before the day's end we reviewed the Newsletter to parents and reminded everyone to ensure parents received it so they could be part of the draw tomorrow.

The only "homework" is to give parents the newsletter and get three1 inch binders and some dividers for class lessons. (they are 90 cents at Extra Foods).
I had a great day with the seniors- they are ready to get started. I enjoyed the grade ones but much prefer the older students.

More tomorrow.
Mrs. J.
