Thursday September 10th
Oh, Oh seems to be quite a few sniffles and sneezes today!! Thank goodness for kleenex and hand washing :) It would really help if each student brought just one box of kleenex each and we will have a good supply for the upcoming cold season. Thanks.
Our morning went very quickly- after a grammatical error assignment, we voted on our class motto for this year. We have the top two which will be decided on tomorrow. One is: live, laugh, learn and the other is to try and fail is better than failing to try. Personally I like the short and sweet one but it is the students' decision. I have challenged them all to think of any others that should be added to our vote.
Mrs. McPhee did a 45 minute music session with the class this morning. After music and snack, we did a review of the procedure for mathematical division and the students did a diagnostic test to give me an idea of their basic add, subtract, divide and multiply skills. I don't mind sharing that there seems to be a bit of a math phobia among the students- many said they are 'not good at math". Many were unable to persevere through a rather basic review. I have my work cut out for me in the math department it seems.
The students filled out a brief survey for their opinions about reading. As of next week I will be establishing a silent reading and home reading program for them. I would appreciate if they would either bring a book from home or go to the local library and find something to try.
After lunch P.Ed. was scheduled but our session was cut short in the gym but extended by our school participation in the Terry Fox Run. Congratulations to Darby and William who both ran 4 times round the circuit (perimeter of our school fields and the Discovery trail). Darby won a commemorative t-shirt. That's three times more than most of the other grade sevens- Kai and I did it twice!!
We finished the day with some semi-organization of school supplies as the students began to design a personal CD cover (art/design). However, everyone was rather sweaty, thirsty and tired. 15 students won their choice from a collection of school supplies in our class draw. I have encouraged the others to return their forms tomorrow for their incentive prize.
We had another productive day and while there is no homework, it is important that students bring their binders and dividers to class as soon as possible. Friday (tomorrow) I will be setting up desk and binder organization ready for next week. Please read and return the parent information form. Thanks- have a good evening.
Mrs. J.
