I didn't realize until I finally arrived home on Friday after sports day that the backs of my legs were badly sunburned!! Just a reminder that even in the 'haze' I need to remember sunscreen on the front AND the back!!! DDuhhhh! :) I am still plugging away at Term 3 and year end reports- nearly there. There was a bit more last minute marking than I had bargained for!!
Well, we all survived Monday (just) - I will be completing the novel Word to Caesar one painful chapter at a time this week :) My goal is to finish this novel this year even if I have to read it to my charges (I have not reached the end of it two years in a row!!- this is my third try and I am determined it will be completed. Actually, the students are listening to it (and some are following along in their novels) quite nicely and when I ask questions about it they are able to answer correctly- so only three more chapters to go!! Nearly there.
Today we finished Ch 12. Our main character, Paul, has managed to meet with the new Emperor Hadrian but now needs to find Severus' wife in the Sabine Hill's farm in an attempt to present Hadrian with evidence to bring Severus back from banishment in the Provinces (Britain). Of course, he is trying to outrun some nasty characters who would rather have him 'disposed off' now that he (Paul) has managed to escape their traps.
I tried some Mindwinders (logic/word games) but not all brain cells are fully functional!! Ended up giving away clues and answers...some were very cheesy (like... L blue, red, green = past L colours (pastel colours!!!) Here's another one I tried to get a laugh from... a kid's answer on a health science test... What's a caesarian section?...Answer: a district in Rome. LOL
We completed some end of term information in puzzle format about the influence of Roman (Latin) names on our planets and months of the year. We discussed the use of nuemonics to help with memory of the order of things. Many years ago my neumonic for the planets was My Very Earliest Memory Just Started Under Nobody's Power (it doesn't really make sense but I will always remember the order of the planets because of it - even if Pluto is no longer considered a planet!!) Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto (it's still important to me or my neumonic is defunct).
Jackie D. returned to congratulate the students on completing the 8 week Drug and Alcohol Awareness Program and to distribute certificates and recognition. We did some team work type activities and generally provided our feedback about our likes and wishes in a survey format.
We finished our day at computers and after a look at a unique 'virtual' game from the BBC web site - the students enjoyed some free time. If interested check out a neat simulation of a 'whodunnit' type called Death in Rome on www.bbc.co.uk/deathinrome Some students managed to solve it quickly (it took me a while). You have to use clues and info. available to find out what killed the slave in Rome- quite clever!!
The students and I are planning a variation of fun and team type activities and challenges this week. I am tallying up the interest survey we did today and will keep you posted on our class decisions. It's going to be an interesting week. No homework BUT returning remaining library books would be appreciated as would the reamining $$$ for the hoodies that were ordered. I have asked students to bring bags (the new cloth ones are great) as we will be starting to clean out and send "stuff" home. Donations of leftover supplies will be gratefully accepted if they are in working order and students don't want them for next year.
Have a great evening- see everyone Tuesday.
