Sunday Feb. 23rd. A catch up post!!

Woke up this morning on time to see the Swedish hockey men receive the silver medal so it was clear then that Canada had won its final gold medal in men's hockey :)
Congratulations to every one of our dedicated athletes with and without medals- you did Canada proud 25 10 gold 10 silver and 5 bronze
(I think Bobby just won our class poll on medals from Sochi)

Just finished watching the closing ceremonies from Sochi
"The athlete's games" according to the IOC president

wow, wow and wow what a show and impressive closing...I heard words like 'spectacular', 'amazing', 'technologically impressive', 'emotional' and the Sochi games themselves described as 'kind, welcoming and inclusive' ....good job - well done, Russia
When I consider the venues, the infrastructure, the opening and closing ceremonies, the fireworks, the daily operations, the technology involved as well as the security, the cost of the games begins to make a bit more sense.
Be happy for the distraction of the games to be over though!

Anyway- taking a bit of a break from report cards to post so better cut to the chase!

Friday 21st
Term 2 final spelling tests unit 10 and N challenge words

Last  activity for SRA reading program.
I only use the program one term a year as recommended by the SRA  program organizers.
I encouraged every student to jump up a level just to see how successful they could be on the next
reading level- I will be reporting  on the best score in the level that is the comfortable level for each
student not necessarily the last activity!
Sometimes the 'pattern' of the program is transferable from level to level and I find that students can often progress successfuly well beyond their starting level once they understand the nature of the reading for both comprehension and word knowledge including vocabulary, grammar and study skills (like using a dictionary or reading a schedule/graph or catalogue).

The advantage of the SRA reading program (at least in my opinion) is that it provides appropriate levelled material for every student no matter the student's reading ability everyone is doing the 'same' activity at a level that is comfortable for them. It is the student's own success with the material that determines his or her placement by the end of the program. There are students who are motivated and always those who are not but no student is in 'competition' with another. I like this quotation from the SRA teacher's manual:
"In a multilevel program it makes little sense to ask if level 5.5 is where a student "ought to be
reading" in the fifth month of fifth grade, and SRA discourages such literalism about reading levels.
The multilevel philosophy holds that every student "ought" to be reading at the level where he or she experiences success...."
Your child's success on the program will be shared in the upcoming term 2 report card.

Caught some of the men's ice hockey semi- final from Sochi
Yeah, Canada!

Math 7 quiz on the circle geometry unit

[Left myself a bunch of marking this weekend- but I must confess that I am so curious about how students managed the learning that, while I might complain about the time it takes, I still enjoy doing it and seeing where success is and where more work is needed (whether mine or theirs)!]

Read to self/ drop in

Computer lab session (first in a while due to the FSA assessments)
Had about 10-15 minutes longer than usual :)
