Tuesday January 14th

It was a more settled day for everyone today....
I am always grateful when Monday is 'under our belt'!

Reminders
Spelling I words and unit 5 on general list Thursday
Social studies project sections for progress (a few students have said they are working on sections at home) and I would like to encourage all students to plan to complete  as section or two at home
Math 7 solve three equations for the activity from class today

Our day
band class

language Arts
returned the spelling tests from Friday and we discussed general results and how to maintain or improve - nothing beats preparation in the way of actually practicing/ studying the words
Time for some study (for some!)

Choice of work on socials project or science activity with a reminder that we have a computer session this afternoon- I am making a point to check up on individual student progress by asking for the paragraphs as each section is completed so I can proof them and return them for revision. I am confident about the progress for the majority of my grade six students and know who needs a bit of extra assistance but I am not so confident with some grade seven progress.
Every year there are a few who 'slip through the cracks' despite my attempt to organize and set them on their way. I try different things every year but haven't yet found a 'bullet- proof' method of ensuring time given is time used wisely whether in class or in the lab.

Math 7
We welcomed a new student to out math 7 group
Today we reviewed the Friday quiz and looked at the areas we need to redo
FYI that would be the additional d subtraction of integers.
The section on arising expressions was generally strong.

Our algebra activity today had us practice the concept of solving equations by isolating the variable using the opposite operation and balancing (rewriting the equation) to solve the word problem.  The most important skill is being able to accurately create an equation from the problem provided.

Read to self
Record

Computer session for socials project research and word processing of sections already completed
Good news the printer is now working properly again :)

Art collage/ sandwich (French)

We  are completely sure that the novel, Safe House, is NOT the novel for our next class read aloud - we did not even get to chapter 5- apologies to the author (I personally enjoyed it as I grew up on Scotland with the sectarian troubles in Ireland being a daily news item)
However, when students are not looking forward to it, are designing paper airplanes to fly(!) in class -  I was reading and did not realize until it was too late!! and are chatting during the story ....you just know.
We are actively looking for another novel that will be suitable. Any ideas?

Dismissal
Have a good night
Mrs. J.
