c'est vendredi le vingt deux novembre :)
Another Friday..
we had such a productive morning that I was up to a little 'bribery' for our afternoon computer session!!
I am embarrassed to admit I agreed if they kept up the good work we could exchange for some 'free time' on-line (within reason of course appropriate for the school environment).
Reminders
Term 1 reports went home today please remember to ask or the envelopes might stay at the bottom of their packs!! :)
no new homework
Have a good weekend
Our Day
After some directions and instruction on strategies for finding information in a content areas (science, socials, math) text we set about working on partner activites which were different for each grade level
Global Citizens text Grade 6 Chapter 1 reading review (answering questions about the content and themes of the first chapter)
Ancient Worlds Grade 7 question activity on the contents of Chapter 2 about artifacts and archaeology
I was totally impressed at the work ethic this morning- we worked for a solid 40 minutes on this activty and were productive- still need some time to complete
then we finally managed to have a chance to visit the school library for a book exchange. Thanks to Mrs. Blackwell for allowing us a before recess visit.
Math
prep for problem solving strategies.
TPS strtegy for encouraging students to think for themselves first, then to partner up and talk to each other about the problems and finally share the solutions together. This method of collaborating gives students a chance to take a few more risks- I do not use the 'results' of this activity for any kind of formal assessment instead I am looking for them to be cooperative and collaborative and share ideas and thinking about the math problems.
This way, when the time comes for formal assessment that they have to complete individually, they should be able to recognize the problem types and be able to apply the skills and be successful on the assessment in the new year.
Read to Self & record progress
It has taken a while but the students are very settled and the majority use this time so well that their reading skills are improving every day. I am proud of how hard they have been working today especially as it is a Friday. We had a shaky start to the week and a solid finish.
There is also a Drop in resource time from 1-1:30 some students chose to complete their math and science work there.
Computer session - yes, the one I sold out on!!!
Free time (I still had to monitor as there are always a few in every class that 'push the envelope' on what is appropriate- it is funny that they comply without any argument because they know and I know that they are really testing the water to see if I mean what I say!) I do.
Among other things students worked on their stories (last week's activity),
watched some song lyric videos and listened to some songs,
played on-line games which included riding bikes, parking trucks and bouncing on a trampoline (virtually that is),
some messed around with the Wordle program and others
played a building game.
It is always interesting for me to see what they do with the free time they are given- keeps me up to date so to speak.
Back in class I ditributed the report cards and gave the students a chance to look at them before sealing the envelopes just in case any one had any questions or concerns- truthfully, there should be no surprises- I hope that is the case for parents too. Parent teacher interviews are next week - see yesterday's post for times available and call the office to book.
We read through Chapters 21 and 22 of Word Nerd
packed up and dimissed for the weekend.
Looking forward to getting some sunshine in before the evening sets in. Have a good weekend.
Mrs. J.
