Spelling practice/study for tomorrow's test Unit 2

Editing skills on the Success of the Coca Cola brand which led us into some discussion on the marketing of Brand products to children.

Heteronyms are words which are spelled and sound the same but have a different function in a sentence like the word fall as in the verb (to fall) and fall as in the soon of the year. We started work on an activity which we didn't quite finish this morning.
We'll follow it up Thursday morning.

Remembered to return the student journals today - some great ideas and interests for the 'passion' projects for upcoming Fridays

Math 7
Decided to give an extra night for practice and completion of the Ch 2 p. 58 # 9-12 examples


Today we looked in class at the procedure for multiplying decimals using powers of 10 by movement of the decimal point to the right of the numeral  and moving it to the left if multiplying by a decimal.
The students seemed to get the hang of it quickly. A quick check showed some confusion in the end product so I know this skill needs more time and practice tomorrow

Second part of class we used the computer lab and I found that some students are not using the practice time on the computer wisely or properly because they want to get to a game. I need to address the reason I am using the computers and while I do not mind a game when the practice is done I really need students to understand that the point of using technology is to help math skills and learning improve.

Most seemed to enjoy having a choice- some complained it was boring ( there are always some in every class)

Back in class we discussed some issues around name-calling and physical issues as part of our Health and Safety sessions - I would like to encourage all students to see their own part in the issues we have been having and try to be aware of their instinct to have hands on one another- it makes me very uncomfortable. Then we shared some grapes that were delivered as part of the healthy schools program so it was are felt time to share some food.

Then I read a chapter of Word Nerd in which Ambrose convinces Cosmo to attend a Scrabble competition in the most unexpected manner when he 'saves' him from his partner in crime by calling
him Uncle Coz and getting him to drive away from trouble!
The students sure seem to be enjoying the story!!
