Monday Oct 28th
Need to dash tonight so I will do the reminders for home practice and then fill in the details of our day later this evening.
Reminders
Wednesday Math 7 redo of the Unit 5 skills multiplying and dividing decimals (quizzes are created from the classwork so review examples are already in binders)
try three or four Order of Operations - correct answers were given today so studenets just need to show the steps to reach the correct solutions
Spelling two lists are now in operation. The list for the Challenge group is a trial of a vocubulary program called Vocab-u-lous using some more advanced vocabulary (some may be a bit obscure) words in context and providing less (9 or 10). This program will require dictionary skills.
the list for challenge is on the worksheet but I will be providing a list of the first 5 tests tomorrow as I will be asking for the worksheets to be handed in
List 1 for challenge: abattior, aficionado, alchemical, anachronism, accelerant, antecedant, adit, abstract and acclimated
Unit 5 for all other students [some are choosing 8 words of the 12 to focus on for more success - working up to a whole list once results are better.
students reading Coraline need to be ready for the meeting after school tomorrow for the 'book to movie club' make every effort to finish the novel :)
reminders that on Thursday (Halloween) at school the primary students will not be dressing up. The
intermediate students are welcome to as long as the costumes are appropriate for school not too gory or scary for the little ones in our school and not too inappropriate a nature- no weapons, masks or semi-clothed bodies!!
more later...
I'm baaaack!
Our day today...
Phys Ed. Great session did a running warm up and a stretch for the upper thighs before a partner practice with volleys and bumps for volleyball and then mini games 3vs3 and full team 6vs6.
Excellent participation today and some excellent effort. I worked closely with the students who need
to play an adapted version of the game called Newcombe Ball which provides practice throwing and catching over the net until the confidence and spatial skills develop.
I always encourage the students to thank one another after the sessions (something that is a part of curling) and that seemed to finish the class with a positive high five and thank-you.
Spelling Unit 4 results we're generally good - approx 6 students are struggling with the spelling list and approx 6 students started a challenge program today called Vocabulous which is a vocabulary building activity which uses advanced vocabulary and develops skills of recognizing in context meaning and will also need the use of a dictionary - I have 5 Oxford dictionaries and two collegiate level dictionaries so the resources are there.
This week the activity for the spelling vocab. On the general list - Unit 5 - was to pick 6 words to place into a correct sentence.
The challenge list students will receive their first 5 sets of words tomorrow - today the first 9 were on the worksheet which I will be collecting when it is completed.
Math 7 was a bit noisy today as I had Mrs. Drew, Mrs Dawson and myself working with different levels of completion of Order of operations and various levels of understanding!
I started class with a Mind-Up breathing exercise to calm every one a little and then I set about making a list of students who want a redo of Unit 5 and added the students who need (but do not necessarily 'want' to redo it!!)
I was able to share term results with students as I updated math progress this weekend so they could understand what a difference a better result would make. I think I convinced the few who were not sure they wanted to redo the quiz - thank-you all in a day's work ;)
Other than that we worked through the "I can't find that worksheet", the "I don't remember that worksheet and the "I didn't get that worksheet" and finally managed to get examples practiced and correct solutions shared. The students who were finding the work easy enough to fly through received a challenge worksheet which I need to do myself tonight as I couldn't find my key!
Tomorrow we will be doing a bit of review of multiplying and dividing decimals and finding some examples of that skill using BEDMAS (order of operations)
Read to self record (only 3 more days in October before the monthly draw for a scholastic voucher)
Socials
We had a neat lesson today on the archaeological find of the Ice man known as Otzi who was discovered in the Austrian Alps (1991) and the right to his remains fought over by Italy and Austria. Italy eventually won him to their museum because DNA or genome identity showed he was Italian and Carbon dating showed him to be 5,300 years old- Neolithic. We read about him, we watched a five minute documentary on YouTube and after some excellent discussion the students all managed to answer the question
Why would scientists and archaeologists be 'excited' about the discovery of this Neolithic trader?
Their answers were amazing.
I read Ch 17 of Word Nerd while the students were approving the latest seating plan which I put into place after school tonight. I am looking forward to see how it works tomorrow- it looks good in an empty classroom - lol
Energy for Halloween is ramping up!
Have a great evening - soccer practice at 8pm!
Mrs. J.
