Wednesday, September 25th
Had a meeting after school tonight looking at a variety of report card templates- will try to get this posted double quick...
Wondering if any parents have requests or comments that can be forwarded to our committee about what they might like to see in a new report card format ???
Just a thought.

no math homework tonight as I need to go over place value more in depth before I set them loose on the activity
no home practice tonight
Our day
Language Arts - returned yesterday's paragraph activity for Chapter 3 of the novel
what we did well: paragraph format was generally good, use of complex sentences and understanding of the information in the chapter that helped answer the question
What needs work: writing conventions (use of capitals, punctuation and some spelling), providing enough details to answer the question asked and keeping personal opinion out of a literary answer.
Some could have used their 'charts' of information gathered from the readng (I read aloud) better- that will come...I make the effort to always have something either discussed or a list, chart or brainstormed 'aid' before I ask students to write otherwise many have trouble getting started. One good thing about using Word progrsam for this activty is that I recieved 20 of 24 activties (one student absent).
The students will have a chance to do a good copy on Friday at the computer lab and that is the assessment that will be recorded- everyone has a chance to improve their rough draft using the written feedback from the initial assessment.
Orientation to the Library with Mrs. Sherlock- students enjoyed and learned through a team Jeopardy game aspects of library research, internet safety and watched a few clips of the book to movie club picks for this school year (Coraline, Percy Jackson and Hunger Games)
Math 11-11:30 in class- returned the partner activity from yesterday (all student parners did well no one less than 80%) today writing decimal numbers using place value (visual) to help place decimal numbers.
11:30-noon computer lab students checked out chapter 2 which we will be starting with on-line (MathLinks 7). If you have a minute google BC Math Links 7 and see what resources I will be using on-line- the students tried a pretest on the quiz (pre-test we haven't used text yet!) and the sudoku, crossword puzzles and internet connects for the chapter which is Operations with Decimal Numbers
read to self- grtting better but...same old ...working on the structure, the stamina and the bathroom visits!!!!
Physical Education -gym- (they prefered the gym to outdoors today?) continued game of elimination dodge started on Monday and the students managed to play well together for half the class- needed to switch it up (lost my whistle today so it was diffcult to get their attention so a couple of students thought they'd be helpful and be my "whistle" people :) they tried and I appreciated the help but as you can imagine either I need to buy a new referee whistle or find the one I have misplaced!!
Played a bench ball type game for the rest of our gym time.
I'm ready for some new games.
back in class everyone enjoyed a pear from the fruit and veg program as I read to the end of chapter 8 of Word Nerd. Cosmo (his landlord's son) has returned from a stint in jail and Ambrose (our main character) lets his imagination get the better of him which doesn't help his overprotective mother! One of the students commented that Ambrose "doesn't have any filter" to his observations and comments. I believe that is why the students love this story because the character just lets his thoughts and ideas run out of his head and mouth with no concept of social etiquette (kind of like high-end Aspergers). The student kept asking for more chapters but we ran out of time.
I love it when they enjoy a story - like actually laugh out loud at the character and things that happen to him. So encouraging that I ham it up even more!
planner time (no MC HAmmer today- no time!)
Sorry folks, forget my plan to do planners after reading time because I was so set on getting these students to the gym!! I'll get into a routine soon hopefully- thanks for understanding!
I was in the middle of Where in the World (ticket out the door) when the bell rang. [i describe a place that is a famous monument and students have to give the name of the country and the monument.]
Some students guessed: Egypt, King Tut's tomb
for a correct answer
have a sunny evening
Mrs. J.
