I'll try to be quick tonight
I feel like a guinea pig in one of those little exercise balls - there is so much to do and I seem to be going around in circles and not really getting anywhere!!
I have so many things to keep up with and it seems I am the one with the homework right now as I scramble to figure out which students need what interventions and assistance to be the best learners they can be- it is a tall order!

Novel Chapter 3 Touching Spirit Bear
we made a chart of the character's behaviours that allowed us to have a starting place for the literary question : What more do we learn about Cole's life and how Garvey tries to help him ?
This afternoon we will word process paragraph answers to the question at the computer lab.
Math 7 vocabulary of basic skills - code words used for adding (sum, total), subtracting (difference, minus), multiplying (product) and dividing (quotient, share)
Partners worked on a challenge together using the basic skills- it was a challenge helping students understand that working together was part of the learning curve- it is interesting to watch as some just want to do the activity as fast as they can while others struggle. Research shows that if a person can teach another they actually learn it better themselves (of course I do not do this every day but it is a learning tool that can be positive for certain skills not the least of which is working together cooperatively). It took a while for everyone to believe that I was serious about one activity per partnership.
We also reviewed the all important Place Value which is necessary to understand as we move into basic skills with decimal numbers.
Read to Self- better but still having some growing pains with students 'stamina' some need to be helped to find appropriate level reading material. Interesting to watch those who have difficulty with their focus on text and how they resort to distracting themselves and/or others. Wish you could see it in action. Of course, the majority of students LOVE this quiet (don't have to listen to Mrs. J. time) and are reading up a storm :)
record of progress
follow up to the Ch 3 novel activity and complete the chart before heading to computer lab to write the literary repsponses. I also suggested a picture power point of Polar Bears for them to watch but noe everyone managed to get to it.
follow up to the plight of the Polar Bear and global warming issue with the ice habitat being affected - short introduction to the issue produced by the Canadian Wildlife Federation (You Tube video)
Planner time (AKA Hammer Time- i let them watch a little of M.C. Hammer and his baggy pants as they retrieved their planners) that's the silly cue for everyone to get their planners out - so frustrating that about 8 students have "left them at home" I guess I need to get on the phone and remind a few student through their parents!!! Sorry but I am not sure what else to do about this excuse!
no time for our read aloud tonight :(
chairs up, bags packed and tme to escape Charlie Brown's teacher !!
Have a good evening,
Mrs. J.
