June 10th back to class

Hope everyone enjoyed their weekend - many teachers used it to get the Term 3 report cards started! I know because that's what I did and quite a few colleagues said that was also their weekend homework!

no homework
although some plan to prepare their newpaper at home (the tea staining and burning of the edges)

Reminders
Friday Sports Day- meetings and cheers will be taking place Tuesday and Thursday afternoon

If your child would like a ht lunch on Friday sports day this week the orders are due tomorrow- I gave the forms out on Thursday of last week and today 12 student asked for another form.
Options are to purchase or bring a lunch
freezies will be on sale after lunch for $1

Our day

Language- vocabulary development
I have this great 3D crossword puzzle in the shape of a cube but I am beginning to realize that some of the clues and solutions are rather obscure for the students
You know an activtiy is dated when...
  • it uses the solution 'dial' for a channel changer (remember we had to turn a dial?)
  • the Swedish pop group Abba is reference (the students asked  "Who are they?")
  • clue: tennis star called Arthur solution 'Ashe'
hmmm might be time to retire that one! However, the students worked together and dili ently and some managed to complete the whole puzzle using the letter clues.

Newspaper group production time
Students decided today on the preferred format for presentation

Math7
Probability and its applications and everyday uses- tried to show a clip of a US news story about a man who can count cards being banned from Vegas casino establishments for winning too much money but either the internet connecivity was slow or it wasn't loading properly- yeh technology- meh!

We also worked together on a couple of Stem and Leaf data presentations in which we had to re-visit how to turn results into percentages.

Sports day meeting (staff)

Silent Reading/ literacy class
some students are just so 'done'

Personal Planning
In setting up the report card templates this weekend I realized that I need some evidence for a couple of learning outcomes before I can report on them!! SO I decided that rather than leave it too late in the week I'd plunge right in and 'gitter dun'!
Today the birth processs and stages of labour of a human baby (sorry, but I have to be this specific with grade 6/7). After nine months in utero what next? Some students made funny faces!

First the students brainstormed (well, some did) what they already knew so I could shape the instructional part accordingly. They knew the basics but after today's class I asked if anyone had learned something new and over two thirds of the class admitted that they had learned something that they didn't know before. That is great for this age level because they usually pretend they know much more than they do. You must have experienced this at home- no?

We completed with a read of and look into their Teenage Survival resource and looked at the section called Romeo and Juliet (about relationships and readiness). I am of the opinion that students need solid information from which to foundation good, healthy and safe decsions for their life's journey.

I just took my time with this 'workshop' and we finished about 2:45 (approx. one hour give or take)

For the last part of class we did some sillly Trivia- name the seven dwarves, name the seven wonders of the world etc.

dismissal
Have a good evening
Mrs. J.
