Friday March 8th

My students knew I was serious when they came into a spanking new seating arrangement this morning.
So far...so good. They have been towing my line :)

All is good (less drama but not completely drama free due to hormones!) and this afternoon the report cards for Term 2 will go home. Yay- no mega projects for school this weekend...I won't know what to do with myself (kidding!).

Homework
read your report card to your parents and have a discussion about what is good, what needs improvement and what goals you have for Term 3
You only need to bring back the envelope signed- you can keep the whole report and if you would like to see me on Tuesday at parent-teacher meets (March 12th) just e-mail or send a note with the report envelope.
I will be available from 2:15-4:30 and 5:15pm until 6:30pm due to a Ladies curling playoff game 7pm at the club.
You can get a hold of me anytime if these hours are not suitable.
Reminders
  • report cards for term 2 went home today- there are two sections one with the learning outcomes, grades and comments (including the written feedback for your child's socials project)  and the other a letter and rubrics for writing and oral language skills
  • parent-teacher meetings Tuesday March 12th
  • 2pm dismissal Tuesday to accommodate the meetings
  • grade 8 registration forms are due back before spring break- actually I just received an e-mail telling me that Mr. Thompson from DRS will pick them up on Wednesday next week March 13th
  • camp forms??

Our day...
daily French

Band class

Science- everyday chemical compounds in the household- today we did a "What am I?" quiz on such lofty chemical compounds as acetic acid (vinegar) and citric acid (lemon) etc and had the students use clues from the names to guess the common kitchen name of ingredients like salt, sugar, baking powder ...
We did the same with common bodycare products. I provided a list of crazy sounding contents from the boxes of some products that I had at home and asked them to use the clues in the first five ingredients to guess what it was. I used a shampoo, a sunscreen, a lotion, a perfume, an eyemake up and a mascara.
It is really quite alarming what they use to create these products and give them a shelllife. Apprently one of the worst offenders for toxicity is 'fragrance' and it is pretty much in nearly all body use products!

Math 7 continuing work on practice of making reflections of geometric designs on the Cartesian plane. The students are doing a good job. There were however, lots of points just one or two units away from where they should be becuse some wqere 'eyeballing' the shapes and redrawing them but not using the reflection line. Mrs. Dawson came up with the idea to highlight the refelction line and it worked very well.
The stduents have requested that the quizzes be separate o there id no confusion between slides, mirror images and turns- great idea. There will be a translations quiz (slides) next week before spring break.

some minor drama at lunch

silent reading
really good today

computers - time to give the students a chance to do some research and detective work of their own on the EWG website and the data base for household products to follow up our science lesson and discussion this morning.

Art
Greek mythology images of gods and monsters- intent following sketch lines and colouring effectively
My issues from yesterday did not surface again becuase I followed through (for the students who were silly yesterday) with isolation (from peers) for art time and the remaining students got on with the job and did very well too. Great session.

After we cleaned up I distributed Term 2 report cards.
Some students were upset with marks that they thought should be higher. I did my best to explain that they may be excellent athletes or artists or musicians but when things regluarly do not get completed or maybe it is a sportsmanship issue or a forgotten instrument on a regular basis that these do affect overall performance!
I got some "if looks could kill.." glares!
It is an occupational hazard! I try to be fair and kind but also honest with my comments and reporting. Oh, well. Sorry.
I do hope everyone will have a great weekend and that the report will not dampen enthusiasm for the sunshine. I am not sure what Monday will look like considering we change the clocks! Yuk! I hate the first day after daylight savings.
Mrs. J.
