Monday Feb. 4th, 2013

Wow- eight students away today meaning one third of my students in Gr 6/7 are missing classes. The ski program accounts for only two of those eight so it is the height of flu season- what a great time to do annual governement FSA assessments! Wonder who didn't think that one through?
Snarky comment to open the post!

Today we put a new seating plan (another one) into effect and with the students away it made an amazing difference. Some are not 100% confortable with their new partners but there is enough moving around in the day to compensate for social needs.

Our day...
new seating

daily French

spelling Unit 4 redo and new Unit 5 vocabulary and writing activities connected to the 24 words selected for the test
I quietly played Pachelbel with ocean sounds in the background and it seemed to help with the qiuient seat work.

Math 7
8 grade sevens away- 4 in Mr Parker's class and another 4 from mine!
Glad I didn't schedule any FSA assessment sessions for today!
Math problem solving recognizing the skills and steps needed to solve the arithmetic problems. For example in one problem the students had to recall the following skills to find an answer to this doozy

If a 45c popsicle was reduced by one third , how many could you buy with $4?

1. determine the amount saved on a popsicle that retailed at 0.45 if it was reduced in cost by one third (need to know the procedure for converting fraction into decimal 0.33 and multiply to find the saving of 0.15 per popsicle)
2. now subtract 0.33 from 0.45 to find a new cost of 0.30 cents per popsicle
3. next divide $4 by 0.33 to find that you can by approx 13 popsicles for your $4

multiple steps - lots to remember. We managed five examples like this today- some had forgotten the procedure for probability which was needed in another sample- that's why we are practicing problems like these! Generally, a good session- new seating has helped with the on-going issues with a few characters!

Silent reading excellent today :)
Impressed with the concentrated reading (only one with non-fiction)
I also made a real effort NOT to interrupt my students while they were reading

Personal Planning Choices and Consequences
discussion and activity
think-write- share

Science Mystery Materials demonstration- using sesnses to infer the materials inside a number of small containers based on sound, weight and commom sense experience.
I will be able to conduct some more science labs with the help of an SFU volunteer in my class Kim Benson who will be working with us on Monday afternoons. She spent the afternoon with us today.

Read aloud for the last ten minutes before homework and reminders (of which there are lots!!!)
Chapter 1 of Dear George Clooney, Please Marry my Mother by  Susin Neilson who also wrote Word Nerd

After the end of day procedures

Seems to have stopped raining...yay...short week this week...expecting it to be as productive as today :)
