Language Arts
Finally found a chunk of time for the roots and etymology work (Unit 2 last week) Unit three this week. And vocab-u-lous C and D vocabulary activities. It is interesting to observe how some students have difficulty trusting themselves with the task and need the re-assurance that they are 'doing it right'. I would like to think this activity over the last couple of weeks has allowed them to see how the definitions of the words we use can be predictable even if they are unknown words to us at first. Dictionaries are 'old school' but have been our 'lifeline' for the final say on the definitions that we have pieced together using the meanings of the roots and suffixes.

How far can I make one bag of Skittles go?
We used white boards and partnered our brain cells to identify the city, country and monuments that were being described in short passages. Many of the monuments we have studied together this year and just a little bit of memory and geographical knowledge meant a mini treat of one or two skittle each! It worked like a charm and the students seemed to enjoy it. Some of the places were: the Taj Mahal in Agra, India, Stonehenge, Great Britain (some students wrote it as Stone Hedge which I thought was amusing :)), the Coliseum in Rome, Italy and Niagra Falls, Ontario, Canada and Mt. Everest in Nepal. I managed to drain a whole bag of mini treats and everyone managed one or two correct answers.
Remember instruments and music sheets tomorrow!!
Have a good restful evening.

Hi Selene,
ReplyDeleteWas checking out your posts, and again, am amazed at how much you get through in a day. Love your idea of skittles for answers ... wish I had a teacher like you when I was in school. :D The brochures the students are making sound incredible, so was wondering if you were planning to show some of them on the blog? I know, more work for you. lol.
Hope you guys get some nice weather soon. Too bad I can't send you some of our 30+ degree weather.
Hope the rest of the week goes well.
Cheers,
Diane.
Great idea about showcasing the brochures- they are amazing. I'll see what I can do after I get report cards completed.
DeleteThanks for all the encouragement :)
