I can already tell that this week is going to fly by...
welcome back Tesla and Cris :)
No new homework
many students (about 8) are working on their Greek brochure at home on home computers. Just a reminder that the project is due on Thursday. I have rallied the troops and I am confident that the majhority can reach the goal.
For the few that have been a way for one reason or another, just let me know what you think you might be looking at for an extention. Thanks.
Reminders
Band practices Tuesday afternoon and a Thursday Band show'off' of musical talent with the Garibaldi Highlands Elementary Band classes will take place in our gym on Thursday afternoon. If you would like to be impressed, and have an hour, come to the school at 1pm for the performance.
Friday is sports day. Thank-you to the students who have agreed to participate by being assistants at the stations.
Today
9-9:30am computer session for scoials brochures - many are well on their way to completion. Three were handed in today and are very impressive.
Vocabulary activity (little time- follow up Tuesday)
Band
Math7
Our learning intention for today's class was to put the knowledge of the formulae and our calculating skills to work solving word problems for area, perimeter and volume. A reminder of the steps for success are always a good way to start:
1. read carefully to figure out the problem that you are being asked to solve (WHAT?)
2. look for visual (diagrams) or written (description) that give hints and cues about possible ways to solve the question asked. (HOW?)
3. start with what you know for sure- the information given (WHERE are the clues?)
4. apply the formula and substitute the numerical values for length, width and height
5. calculate (be accurate and do step by step- show your working)
6. solve the question and state your solution remembering the metric value and express as a square (area) or cubic (volume)
We made our way together through 7 challenging activites and the students caught me out a couple of times (okay four!) making errors in metric expression or calculation and (I must be honest) not all were on purpose!!! At least they are listening to me and it gives them the satisfaction of receiving a bonus 'busted point' for my lack of focus. Hopefully I'll be more with-it tomorrow!
Silent Reading/work catch up time
Thank-you to Manpreet and Harjot who worked with Aaron today and did a great job. We look forward to Aaron visiting and he enjoys being with us too :)
Computers (see above for more scoials time) Greek Brochures- these are the last few sessions this week and it seems many students are in 'good' progress shape for this activity and intend to hand it in on Wednesday. Some need a bit more due to being away.
Science- completed a quick retrospective of the concept of Pangea and the theory of Continental Drift looking at pictures, maps and diagrams from the Earth Science Unit in the science text BC Science 7.
Students were not as familiar with mt. Saint Helen's as I thought but they were able to recall where the most devastating recent earthquakes took place (Japan, Haiti and Chile)
Quick 'name game' before dismissal which we will follow up tomorrow as our gym time has been bumped due to band practice. We all had difficulkty trying to think of animal names that begin with the letters 'n' and 'z'. We googled it after the dismissal bell. Naked mole rat -really? Who wants to be known as the naked mole rat?
More tomorrow.
Have a great evening
Mrs. J.
