Trust that everyone had a good Easter weekend- even if it was just enjoying the beautiful sunshine and teaser of summer weather to come.
We had a busy family get-together for this Easter holiday that included a baby announcement (not mine Phew!the first great-granchild), a dinner for 15 on Friday, a party for many more on Saturday and a trip to have another Easter dinner with my dad who is still at LGH on Sunday. Monday was laundry and getting ready for the week ahead!!
Back to school went smoothly enough today. It was nice to see all the students again and the weather was also pleasant enough.

General Day
Daily French
Return Spelling Unit 1 (class average down a bit as many) students succumbed to the spelling trickey of the English language and fell right into the traps that we had discussed last Monday (the extra letter, the i before e, the silent sound, the wrong vowel etc)
We prepped this week's Unit 2 words with a similar analysis but I can't make them study they have to have a desire to improve or to care enough to make some study time (I do provide an opportunity to do some study in class EVERY day but not every student uses it as wisely as I would like!!
Langauge recognition- found a couple fo interesting 'riddle' puzzles that request knowledge and recognition of synonyms, past participle, suffix, parts of speech etc to solve the question. For example:
What did one earthquake say to the other?
It's not my fault (cheesy)
We did one together and the students tried the second on their own or with a partner. Good work on this activity. I enjoyed hearing the students talking through the clues and recognizing the solutions.
Short Story (in 'honour' of the Playoffs starting tomorrow)
The Goalie, by Rudy Thauberger about a father's perspective on his son's enjoyment of playing the postion of goalie for his hockey team.
We will be working with this story throughout the week as it has all sorts of levels and opportunites for discussion and writing. When does a sport that you love to participate become a 'chore' that you no longer enjoy? Can you paradoxically love something so much that you hate it?
Consider the opening sentences...
" Nothing pleases him. Win or lose, he comes home angry, dragging his equipment bag up the driveway, sullen eyes staring down, seeing nothing, refusing to see."
Today we read and started a bit of story related discussion. Tomorrow follow up...
Math had a half hour or less of the movie left. The busted points begin again but this term I plan to be less of a 'busted-case'. We'll see. These students can be really observant and I wish they'd 'bust' themselves with the fervour they tend to catch me out. Maybe I should plan a buy-back program if they are being unruly in class!!! Now, why didn't I think of that before now?
Math- Chapter 8:4 circle graphs and their connection to fractions and percentages. How to analyze and answer questions about numerical equivalents as represented in a circle graph. Today was instruction-tomorrow will be the follow up practice. Students have agreed to a Friday review quiz on finding the circumference and areas of circles. No new homework for tonight.
Silent reading- took the time during the quiet moment to ask students about their comfort level with the new seating plan that I have organized. There were a few 'tweaks'. I arranged the desks after school tonight. It's like a NASA exercise!!
French L'armoire
dessinez et coloriez votre armoire (wardrobe)
This activity allows the students to be artistic and include the names of the items of clothing they would find in their (or a dream closet). Be creative - if you want a closet full of designer duds, this is the chance to create it :)
Physical Education
Badminton- everyone did badminton- no one was upset- everyone played well- no one was injured and everyone particiapted. Much better than our last Thursday disaster.... the difference was me being assertive about the class!!
Shhh, no one managed to hit me with a badminton raquet today either...
back in class the students opted to continue work on the designing of their wardrobes for art even of it is for a French activity. They look promising but I am finding that the boys are a bit lost about what should be on a hanger- they are so funny- "Can I just stuff it all in a drawer", "Mrs. J. all my clothes are on the bathroom floor!". Hoo boy!!
Clean up, clear off desks, put up chairs, get gear from cloakroom and time for
dismissal
desk rearrangement and this Blog post.
have a good evening.
Mrs. J.
