TGIF February 10th

Mid-week I broke a tooth on an oatmeal cookie! I have not had a chance before today to call a dentist- I have a Sunday appointment! Emergency!
I have a sore mouth! The last couple of days have been difficult so I am extra happy that it is Friday!

Homework
None
some students asked if they could take home their novels that they received this week and I was happy to oblige :)
a couple of students took home binders intending to get their papers organized and one was intending to review a math skill
Reminders
No school Monday
Grade seven FSA was completed today

General Day
Daily French

Science investigation: measuring volume of irregular objects by water displacement
Word of the day: meniscus
Students discovered today that even the simple process of adding food colouring to water, and measuring EXACTLY 50ml or 100ml is tricky and needs patience and focus!!
We measured the volume of plastic creatures (bugs, lizards and snakes) using the beaker and the graduated cylinder to subtract water volume from displaced water.
Math skill subtraction of water displaced from original volume to find the object's volume.
Today's learning?
 importance of accurate measuring
importance of following the directions as given and not creating your own version!! (don't ask)
importance of working together to record observations accurately
importance of safety at the sink (one glass graduated cylinder was broken today)

Our next step is to use mass and volume to measure density

Grade seven FSA last section today Numeracy
The grade sevens are relieved that they are finally completed as it has been a very disruptive week.

Grade sixes worked on their novels and some art and having a small group allowed me to work one-one with some students who needed a bit of assistance with their reading work in SRA

Math 7 after the last section of the assessments, neither the students nor I wanted to do any more math today so we discussed the meeting last night with the DRSS counsellor and we went to the DRSS website and looked at the linear schedule, the types of applied skills classes, the teacher websites and marks charts, the bell schedule and we talked about bussing etc
The students had some really great questions about lockers, busses and classes which I did my best to answer. I thought it was a very worthwhile half hour+
For the last 20 minutes of the morning, we did our usual Friday games time (cards, chess, dominoes etc)

Silent reading/
Honour band

Again, having the students at Honour band allowed me to work one-one with some students in need of extra help and or assistance getting organized :)

Art
Logo Letters majority of the class has completed them 17 of 27
so, today we started a new Pop Art activity looking at the work of Andy Warhol
the students have started close ups of wrappers and the design on their favourite snacks and candies.

At the end of our day we viewed a slide show taken from space by astronaut Sunita Williams which shows our beautiful blue planet and what a sand storm looks like as it leaves the Sahara and crosses the Atlantic Ocean, what night looks like on one side of the earth as the other is in the light of day, it showed nighttime light consumption from continent to continent and the shrinking ice of Iceland. It is an amazing short slide show and makes us realize the fragility of the planet we call home. I think the students enjoyed it.

We packed up and cleaned up our art and general 'mess' and listened to Rebecca Black sing, Friday, before Dismissal

This week has been a long one it seems and we are tired. Rest up everyone...Monday you are off, FSA is now completed and I promise to return the rest of the socials projects.
Have a great weekend. I'm going to the dentist! Wahhhhhhhh!
