Happy Heart's Day- La saint Valentin Feb 14th

Well, after a Monday off for a Pro-d day the students came in this morning with lots of pent up energy and lots of goodies as well as good wishes for Valentine's Day- I just knew NOT to try to have a Monday on a Tuesday and that I would have to be flexible to a certain degree!!

We all survived- if you can't beat 'em join 'em!!

Homework
Spelling list #9 for Friday this week

Reminders
Grad hoodie letter coming soon
Camp letter went home last week but I found a few in the recycling and others not taken home. Maybe this year will be the year in which student disinterest will see a cancellation of the 6/7 camp at Evan's Lake- please ask for it of you haven't seen it yet!

Poetry
Today we read Phyllis Gottileb's poem, First Person Demonstrative, in honour of Valentine's Day.
Partly I chose it because I noticed that when some of the girl's handed out class wide cards  to classmates some of the boys in particular were embarrassed and were trying to outdo one another by ripping the sentiments and recycling them!! They weren't trying to be mean, they were protecting their 'man-pride' if you'll forgive the sexist remark- I tried to make them aware of it gently with the poem. The first stanza goes...

"I'd rather
heave a brick than say
I love you, though I do
I'd rather crawl in a hole than call you
darling though you are
I'd rather
wrench off an arm than hug you though
it's what I long to do
I'd rather
gather a posy of poison ivy than
ask if you love me"

So there you have it folks, the age old conundrum- dare I let my feeling be known just in case they are not returned- do I risk rejection or do I go with my heart? The students did a great job making sense of the rest of the poem too. The last line is a kicker...
"and if you
miss the message better get new
glasses and read it twice"

Are men from Mars? Are women from Venus? Aren't we all here on Earth?

Math 7
(I made the decision to abandon my algebra lesson today for safety and sanity!!!) We did a lesson on line geometry instead and we looked at the unique feature that straight lines produce curves in line drawings that join up the sides of geometric shapes. It took some students a few tries although others took to it immediately and we soon had some great examples and colouring too. I believe I made the right decision for today! Algebra returns tomorrow.

Silent Reading

French Cherchez les mots (saint Valentin)
we had a bit of a challenge finding the words in a word search (the students managed it faster than my ailing eyes!!) We filled in the blanks in a romantic letter to mon petit ami formidable!

Gym session slpit gym- students had a lot of energy to run off and did a great job with a split gym of floor hockey and basketball :)

Art
logo letters and a stop gap for those complete in some free hand drawing exercises. I tired to read a chapter of a book that I think will make our next read aloud (Dragon Keeper) but the dismissal bell rang before I got to it!!!

The students were cheeky and said they loved the new book and that confused a few others who were asking if I actually read and they had missed it!! It was quite funny... I love their sense of humour!

Have a good night everyone.
Mrs. J.
