'Tis the last day of school before the Christmas hol's

December 16th (Friday)

...and students are vibrating and bouncing off the walls
Teachers are counting the hours with glee and
are ready for the Dismissal bell
so their students can go free!!

God bless us, everyone! :)

I would like to take the opportunity to wish my students and their families a happy and safe Christmas vacation. A Merry Christmas and a prosperous Happy New Year.
In Scotland we say, "Lang may yer lum reek" which loosely translated means may you always have wood (coal in Scotland) fuel for your home fire. I think it is a lovely sentiment that you will always have a home that is warm and cosy but I have to be careful where and to whom I say it because I get the weirdest stink-eye as people may think I am swearing at them in Scottish.

I was most definitely overcome by the generosity of my students and their families and was so spoiled today with thoughts and gifts and cards and group hugs. Thank-you so much.
I received so many neat and unique items like the Christmas present earrings and a pipe cleaner silver sparkle ring (Thanks Brody and Arsh) and homemade cookies (thanks Manisha and Tesla), mugs and tea, some lovely juice, boxes of chocolates, ornaments, costume jewelery, an alligator stapler (much needed)  and even a very stylish t-shirt (thanks to Teresa, Hannah, Ashley, Sarah, Gurpreet, Eric, Autumn, Rowan, Amrit, Kasper, Simi, Roshni and TJ). I will be sure to have a proper thank-you for you in the New Year.

I 'kissed' them all with Hershey's Kisses of course. The group hug was fun to for the first little bit!!

This morning the Band rehearsal was very good and I was impressed with the sound of the students playing together. We were grateful to be able to hear our students play for us before the parent's concert.I was at the DRSS (junior high) concert on Tuesday evening and I am proud to say that I think our students played every bit as well as the beginner high school band (if not better if I do say so myself although I am a little biased!). Congratulations. Next time we should perhaps video the performance for parents who weren't able to make it.
I am sure the parent's session went as well if not better. We are so lucky to have this opportunity and the talent of Ms. Sorban at Squamish Elementary. It is also neat to see how the high school band students come and assist too- great role models. Thank-you for taking the time to come and enjoy our students' musical work.

After lunch we read 2 Chapters of Word Nerd.
We are now at chapter 16 to start off the New Year.
The students requested that I open their gifts and we made a bit of a game of it. Again, thank-you. I think the students had a bit of silly fun during this time but it was all in good spirits. I noticed that the students really enjoyed being acknowledged publicly. In the past I have stayed away from that because I didn't want anyone to feel bad or left out but this group had lots of fun with it.

Next we cleaned up desks and gathered our belongings to head down to the computer lab when Mr Elliot dropped in to ask for some muscle assistance and the students were only too happy to oblige. So, our class moved our 'new' (new to us) computer lab equipment and unpacked the hard drives. Then they had some free computer time. A big game favourite seems to be Dan-Ball I need to check out how I can use it for chemistry because it seems to have a connection to 'powders' and explosions. I'll let you know.

Honestly by 2:55pm my students were visibly tired and ready to go home. They sure disappeared quickly at the Dismissal bell (actually some managed to trickle out just before the bell sounded).
I have encouraged them to do some research over the Holiday when they have nothing better to do but there is no 'official' work to be done at home.
Rest up and come back ready to work hard in the New Year.

We will be having Cristian H. joining our class in January. A new student, a new year and a new commitment to our learning. Enjoy your two weeks. See everyone January 3rd (Tuesday)
Mrs. J.
