Thursday, September 15th

I have been so impressed with how our students doing the morning announcements are making the effort to be bilingual. Keep up the great work.

First rain of the new school year. I'm sorry but I find it 'refreshing' (it's my Scottish roots- they needed some raindrops :))

Homework and Reminders
Math 7 some students still need to complete (or bring back) the Math Cross reviewing skills and processes for whole number operations: Blue, Manisha, Mariah, Jack, Kasper, Tayo and Marissa
Please note if this assignment is too challenging please do not be worried about letting me know as I am still trying to establish a base line for mt student's individual skills
If not completed today in class, complete the basic skills assignment (also a math cross #1) for tomorrow- most had it half done in class.
Math 6 no homework

Reading and Question activity on the crisis in Somalia- ensure if not completed in class that you have questions #4-9 in sentence answer. I have asked students to let parents know in their planner IF their work has been completed in class.

$10 for planners, necessary supplies and one communication form left to receive from Blue

Reminder to come prepared for the Terry Fox run tomorrow at 9-10am. We would like to ask for a donation of a $1 per student to make an effort to reach our goal for fundraising for cancer. Thank-you.

General Day
French activity Comment ca va? (P.S. I need to get the codes for the accents- please forgive the lack of their use currently) Je suis desole!
We managed to complete the first three pages of the booklet in class together

Somalia activity- answering in full sentences. Follow up to yesterday's reading and discussion- today 's instruction focused on the three main types of question QAR- question answer relationships is a readin strategy that teaches students to recognize what type of question is being asked and guides their reading or thinking to provide a complete answer.
Good readers can identify
1. a literal question- one that is right there to be found on the line of the text
2. an inferential question- one that requires a bit of thinking and searching and may need to include details from more than one line or paragraph AND
3. a critical question- requires a student to delve into their background knowledge and brain cells to find any information or general knowledge that might help formulate an answer- these questions are not generally in the text although clues may be included.
We completed three questions from the activity together and, to the sound of Bob Marley's, Exodus, we did the remaining questions 4-9!

At 10am we had a pre-view of the books available in the Scholastic book fair. I was excited becuse the students were so interested in what was there- many are asking for the Hunger Games trilogy- guess I am going to have to find it for our class.

Math 7 today I made the effort to take students through the routine for our transition and handing in work. We started to organize binders and I had to provide approx 8 students with binders and dividers!! As students get their own supplies I would appreciate getting some back for extras in class.
Pretty good turn in of the homework assignment (5 not handed in and 2 absent students) of 30 total so excellent beginning :)
Today I reviewed place value and reminded them of powers of ten and the pattern(s) and we started- 10 completed in class, a similar math cross puzzle with easier arithmetic examples at approx. the Grade 5 level.
Please complete for H/W

Silent reading- good use of time. Thank-you

Charter activity Part 2 - we discussed what we might be able to expect from each other using the word RESPECT- the results will be part of our class charter

Art Manga- students received booklets with some preliminary ideas and shapes for testing and today we began sketching some faces- objective is first to look at face proportion and then expression especially around the eyes

Phys Ed. game and fitness focus- better use of time today :)

spent a bit more time on the srt activity before
planners- and prep for home
Please note that Verification forms, fridge magnets and a reminder about our Terry Fox run were sent home today.
Have a great evening. See you for our second Friday, tomorrow.
Mrs. J.
