General Day
We completed our 2011 Terry Fox Run this morning. We had a spirited warm up in the gym led by Monsieur Castrillo and at 9:25am we headed out- the Grades 4-7 did two laps around the trails and the primary students did one.
I am not sure how close we came to our school goal but everything went well.

Back in class, I took the opportunity to take the class to the computer lab where I was able to use the Insight program to show students the on-line programs for the Science 6 and Science 7 units. Each text has a web site which can be freely accessed from school and from home which is comprehensive and extends the student learning beyond the classroom.
http://www.mcgrawhillryerson.ca/ for the home site and then type in or search for B.C. Science 6 (or 7) . There are web sites to connect to for each unit's focus, multiple choice quizzes for each chapter and cool things to see and do interactively on-line. It is one of the reasons I chose this publisher. Today I was easily able to show the students that we have had, in the last month, nearly 300 small and some more significant earthquakes off the coast of B.C. (well up and down the Western USA too)
P.S it seems that my web site addresses are not working- try googling the piblishing company McGraw Hill Ryerson instead- sorry- I'll try to look into the problem as they did recently upgrade the websites.

Math 7
I returned the pre-test (Diagnostic) math reviews to students today and we mapped the major strengths and weaknesses that will guide our instruction as we ease into the Grade 7 program. There is no point in starting with decimal operations until we ensure confidence and competence with whole number operations first.
We did look at p44-45 in Ch2 reviewing estimation and looking at how different accuarte results are from estimating a trip across the Trans Canada Highway- this reviewed rounding number skills. We tried a seating experiment which will be for at least a week just to see how we 'roll' seated in places and with peers that they have personally chosen to sit with. (Wish me luck!)
I realize that I need to reach out a communication plan to Mr. Parker's grade seven students as any Math questions or information needs to be directed to me (and Mr. parker of course).

Silent reading

Next step in the Charter agreement- the rule RESPOND- what it will look like, sound like and feel like in our class. Interesting discussion.

Ms. Sorban needed some students from the class to assist with the Band instrument selection for our new students. Thank you to Hannah, Simi, Manisha, Teresa and Autumn who helped tremendously.

As so many students were out this afternoon, we decided to continue with the Manga art project which we started yesterday.

To finish the day we particpated in a Whacky Wordies activity which works both sides of the brain- the visuals like MCE MCE MCE are shown and the students try to guess what the phrase is - they got better and better as we did more. This one is three blind mice (no i's eyes!!!)

planner, clean up and dismissal.
Have a fabulous weekend and rest up for next week!!
Mrs. J.
