Monday, September 12th

Hello everyone

This first full week of classes will challenge our listening and remembering skills but I trust that once we have managed to get through a week of organization, it will be smooth sailing for the rest of the month :)
We will be settling into our organizational routines this week.

Reminders (no 'real' homework just yet!) BUT...
I have encouraged and reminded the five students who left the Newsletter#1 for parents in class on Friday to take them home tonight and to check the Blog if they are able for the new "codeword'
  • please have parents fill in and return the communication form (sent home Friday Sept 9th) and return it to class for entry into the draw for a school supply
  • please give them the information about homework for our Gr 6/7 class
  • Math- grade7 please remember to give your parents the booklet about the grade seven math program that they can keep at home for their perusal
  • Math grade6- complete worksheet on pyramids and prisms if not done in class
  • $10 for planner please if not already submitted
General Day so far...(I am getting a bit of a jump on the Blog as I have some commitments after school tonight)
This morning the seating arrangement by complete random number went very well because the students accepted the method and each other. It was very encouraging. However, there will be some minor adjustments as per needs for eyesight and other important considerations.

I also shared a tentative schedule for this week for Band, Phys. Ed. and computer sessions.
A schedule will be drawn up once times are finalized- we have added 5 new divisions to our school this year so things may change slightly.

We completed a Diagnostic spelling 'test'- not for marks as much as a general guideline about level of spelling and phonetic understanding. That being said, the students are finding my accent rather amusing and are helping me with my pronunciation! lol

We had a Band class this morning and Ms. Sorban was very impressed with the productive class that she had with our group. Way to go Division 1- I'm impressed too. Thank-you.

Math 7 and Math 6 switch.
Mr Parker is teaching the grade six math program and the students will be in his class 11-12 noon every day for their math classes. An area has been established for reminders about homework for both grades.
Today, the grade sevens and I discussed the organization and management of our class as we welcomed another 12 grade sevens to the mix. We arranged a preliminary seating plan and distributed textbooks Mathlinks7. We have 29 in the math class.
Our first activity was a text book 'scavenger hunt' which did not get completed today and which is NOT for homework. I kept the student textbooks in class today and the activity will be completed and reviewed in class tomorrow.
Please note that with so many students I have no extra textbooks and really need students to be responsible once they do take text books home to bring them to school every day!!
An information booklet has been sent home to parents regarding the Math 7 program and how you can help me work with your children in Math this year. I hope you find it helpful.

I always have a quiet reading time after lunch after which we had the draw for a school supply for students who brought back their communication forms (10). Hopefully the others will bring them tomorrow. :)

We then organized supplies into our desks and bins. Some textbooks were distributed today- the Science texts will go out tomorrow.

The code word tonight is bananagrams

For Personal Planning we undertook the first session of drawing up a class charter - agreement about how we are going to 'roll' together as a class community this year. We will complete this activity in the next few days. The students had their chance in groups to say what they would like to see from each other (and from me) this year.

The day sure disappeared fast. Again it was a very positive and productive day- have a fabulous evening and enjoy the sunshine while you can.
Mrs J.
P.S. no one left anything behind in class after school- Woo Hoo Two
